Well, I got the head off yesterday and it all went to plan, other than snapping the little coolant bleed screw thing. However, the gasket is a metal one with 2 notches, does this mean that the head has been off before? The car has 123k miles. All the coolant channels look very corroded and parts of the gasket are a little rusty, could this have caused the failure? What gasket should I use when rebuilding. I will be getting the head skimmed and tested.

To find out which gasket you need, follow the instructions in the Haynes BOL for measuring piston protrusion.

Having a metal gasket does suggest that the head has been off before. As far as I know, all XUD's left the factory with fiber-metal composite gasket.

And it does also sound like this gasket has failed due to the usual problem of the cooling system having no glycol in it. Running an XUD with just water in it will eventually cause exactly what you're looking at.
