Xsara 1.4 Noise from Engine

Post by Mark Harding »

Hi

I have a Xsara 1.4 Forte and there is a noise coming from the engine, it is a grinding noise that rises and falls with the revs, it is most noticeable when you are idleing or at low speeds, and it seems to get worse as the engine gets hotter. I would like to have a go at fixing it myself, although my mechanical skills are all self taught!!! Does this sound like something anyone has had problems with, any help would be great.

Cheers

Sounds like a bearing on something. Does it have a cam belt? if so could be a tensioner or idler, or something that is being driven by the auxilluary belt. Try slackening the aux belt or removing it and see if the noise goes.

Yep -

All later generation 1.4L (TU3) engines have a cambelt.
A stetoscope is perfect to pinpoint such problems. Available at most tool or hobby shops at low cost.

From recent experience on my Mazda. Same problem, turned out to be the water pump had bitten the dust. Had pump and all belts inc timing relaced in one go.
