problem found!

Post by jgra1 »

... i hope....

took driveshafts off again, opened gaitor covering RH (from in car) Driveshaft TRI-AX joint.. one of the three bearings has lost all of its needles...

Did same test with short driveshaft and that is fine

phew!

question..
while awaiting a new shaft, I have left car with neither driveshaft fitted... is this ok or are my wheel bearings going to fall apart when i push the car later?

You shouldnt realy leave it without any shaft fitted, there is a special tool to pop in whilst leaving it, I have made my own simply by cutting the inboard end off an old shaft, or you can stick a piece of broom handle in.

Reason!!

The final drive gears can drop round 45' if this happens, the drive shafts will still go in and everything will feel as normal, untill you start up select a gear and release the clutch, there will follow a mighty bang as the final drive gears spin and smash the final drive housing.

Now this very rarely happens, but just bear in mind that it could.

If you have left the housings empty, you can check the allignment by poking your finger in, if all is well you will be able to feel the splines in the gears, if they have moved you cannot feel them, in this case you can re-allign with carefull poking around.

If replacing the shafts, you realy should be replacing the diff seals.

Slim -

You are right to a certain extent. But there should not be a risc with the later design of the cage wherein the differential gears are located (the friction cage item 9 on the schematic). Only on the earlier PSA design differentials this was a noteworthy risc :
http://www.citroen-pr.net/catalogues/il ... 430250.gif

There is much larger risc the wheel bearings will spit out themselves as these are made of 2 inner half shells fixated and torqued by the CVjoint and the hubnut.
If this happens the frontwheels will simply fall off - leaving you with all sorts of nasty service problems afterwards.

This is rather easy to overcome using 2 large (and thick) washers - one each side of the hub - held together with a bolt & nut. The bolt then taking the place of the stub axle from the CV joint.
Do it to both wheels.

If you dont - you wont get the car moved far before the front wheels leave : as seen on the schematic there is nothing to keep the wheelhub (item 2) inside the bearing (item 5) :
http://www.citroen-pr.net/catalogues/il ... 131150.gif

Note : this is valid for all PSA models - so dont move your car on wheels with no CV joint stub axle and hub nut fitted ...

Slim, Anders, thanks.

I popped my head into a 405 Haynes manual I had and read the 'do not leave car with driveshafts removed due to wheel bearing damage' bit

and thought better of it.. i popped them back in..

I did have visions of wheels falling off ;)

The chances of the wheels dropping off when pushing it out of the garage are very small (i've done this loads of times and never had a problem)

To push the hub from the center of the bearing takes my press up to about 2500psi, thats a lot of force.

But, I did have the front wheel drop off of a GSA years ago!!!

The cause, The driveshaft sheared right behind the nut in the center of the hub, going round a faily fast corner, the hub parted company with the bearing.

Damage, Broken driveshaft, bent lover suspension arm and very dirty pants.

Getting back to the original troubles, I have had this vibration on several cars, (the latest being a Suzuki Swift) If you take the driveshaft apart at the tri-axe joint and clean/inspect the tri-axe housing, you will find a lot of wear on the positive drive side, whilst the back side will be perfect (this is only under stress when reversing) this will cause vibration. As for the cure, get a new one.

Try Malcome at M&C Lockwoods, allways a friendly company to deal with.

Hmmmm...
Wonder if we are talking the same thing ?

I've never had to resort to such forces to remove the hub flange. They always comes out fairly easy - and that scared me when I realised how the wheel was (not) fixated then - with driveshaft removed.

In the same taking - its never the hub flange giving me problems when replacing a front wheel/hub bearing - its always driving out the outer bearing shell from the hub.

Anyways John - you are back on wheels safely. I can sleep again now 8)

;) good Anders..

Yep slim as mentioned, one of the tri ax bearings is missing presumed dead ;) rusty remnants of smelly grease present and a few needles hiding in the back of the joint ;)

New DShaft coming this week and a year old niggle will be gone.. I just wish I had pulled a gaitor or two back months ago.. hindsight hey... I guess we all know what we know because we have learnt ;) - why do I always do it the hard way ;)
