As well as heater probs, have a dreadful banging noise emanating from the rear of the car; sounds like the parcel shelf but 10x as bad. It's quiet on smooth roads but noisy as hell on any slightly rough surface. Any clues/ confirmation of my worst, ie the rear subframe mountings? How long's the job and is it feasible for a middling ability DIYer?

I think your problem is the rubber mountings for the rear suspension assembly. The are sandwiched between two metal plates and the plates are bonded to the rubber. The bond between the plates and rubber mountings fail and the rear suspension floats about. So I have been told.
