Xantia Non Starter

Post by PicassoPigeon »

Went to go home from work last night and my xantia was making some awful clicking/cracking noise every now and then and the engine would shake just as it cracked.
Off down the road and then at the end the car just cut out, it then would not start. Would only turn very slowly.
After trying to start again today, it was slow to turn and made some awful squeaking noise as it turned.

Any ideas?? Thanks.gav425

Hi there, I wonder if your rubber-mounted drivebelt pulley has failed.. this is a known problem.. ( have a look down the timing belt end of the engine -this pulley is on the end of the crankshaft)
I won't do that again

I wonder if something has siezed - like the alternator (second this week! - but generally rare)

I'd start by having a really good look around at the belt end of the engine - and see if anything looks distressed - belt shredded, rubber dust, stains associated with overheating then remove the auxillary drive belt and see if everything is nice and free (tensioner pulleys etc) - then see if the cambelt is still present and looks in order. No reason why you can't turn the engine with the auxilliary belt off - and see if it turns properly if you are convinced the cambelt is still there.

Cambelt is still ok and after removing the aux belt the engine started fine.
The alternator cannot be turned with my hand is that duff?
Also the hydo pump is quite stiff, although as you turn it with your hand it does get loose and then stiff again and then loose.
Everything else is fine and spins very easily.

Thanks.
