Update…

ACAV electro-valve has been in for a week now and all is well. OK, better than well. Lots of power in lower and middle range. Ignition ping has gone under slight load in 4th or 5th gear (up a hill say) I tried hard to get it to ping, but alas… Engine management light no longer comes on when on motorway doing 55 – 70 mph. All in all she's like a new car. Very happy. :D :D

Quick test for 20/16v 155bhp XU10J4 unit to determine whether you have faulty diaphragm(s) or electro-valve.

Do both diaphragms move when you ping accelerator cable. If only one moves, chances are you have a faulty diaphragm or blocked pipes.

If neither move…

Disconnect both pipes from electro-valve (No 16 on diagram). Connect them together by hand for a second or two. If electro-valve is not working one or both diaphragms will start to move from min to max position within a couple of seconds.

If only one diaphragm moves with electro-valve out of circuit then you also have faulty diaphragm or blocked pipes. If neither move do you have suction from main pipe into electro-valve that access diaphragms? If not, I would investigate here first. You may have a block or fault with main suction supply. If you have suction then do have suction at each diaphragm connection pipe (No 5 on diagram). By a process of elimination you will be able to work out which parts are in need or maintenance/repair or replacement.

As genuine Citroen electro valve is £23.31 with VAT and diaphragm is £36.88 with VAT it’s not too expensive to rectify.

Hope it helps

Cheers
Steve
