Checking and renewing gearbox oil

Post by debutant »

Does anybody know how to check the oil level in the gearbox of a Xantia 1997, 1.8i, 16v? I tried to work it out with the Haynes manual but no luck .... there should be a way or is the oil connected to the engine oil (doubt that though).
Thanks,
John

Have a look in the N/S wheel arch where the gear box pokes through, follow the bolts around this, you should find 19mm (or 17mm, can't remember) bolt head, that should be the level plug. The drain is on the bottom of the diff casing. If your going to change the oil, get the right grade as I think is a synthetic type. I changed mine on my old BX and put in EP90 and the bugger wouldn't go into gear when cold!!<img src=icon_smile_blush.gif border=0 align=middle>
