Xantia radiator fans

Post by Quackers »

The radiator fans on my 97 V6 Xantia [AC] are not coming on full stop.

I've found threads on here about them, but they all seem to be just 1 fan coming on, or just high speed.

I get nothing. Also no Aircon, if you press the button many times you can get the light to come on the switch, but it makes no difference, no aircon comes on.

So what to do when you have no fans come on at all, and no aircon?

The problem I had with the 3 fan relays stopped both fans. If a V6 is the same as a 2.1TD start by pulling off the brown electrical connector on the thermostat housing with the ignition on. If the fans start then they are getting power and its not the relays (and someone else will have to help because its always been the relays for me so I've no experience of anything else.)

The cases of one fan coming on are when the low speed doesn’t work on any fan.
When the low speed isn’t coming on at about 90ºC, the temperature keeps rising until the high speed is called for at about 100ºC.
The fault then causes only one fan to come on at the high speed.
Unless it’s reached that, you won’t have had the ‘one fan’ syndrome (yet).
The interior fan must spin before the air conditioning can work.
The aircon may also have an unrelated fault of its own.
Ideas here, and keep us posted:

Right, i poked a stick in the fans to spin them a bit, and they kicked in when it reached 90C :D

Then i let it cool, and made sure they kicked in again when required and they did.

So in theory should they always kick in now when required? I do not want to be stuck in traffic with steam coming out again, or look like an idiot with a stick.

Does this mean the fans are worn? or just not been used that much ? Any ideas?

Since you have air conditioning, it’s easy to test the fans because switching on the aircon must always make both fans spin at the low speed.
It’s more likely that a fan will have worn brushes than that it won’t turn from lack of use.
Try to work out which fan needs a nudge from the stick; it’s likely to be always the same one.
Fan brushes can be replaced, but in the UK it’s easier to get another one from a wreck:

If the brushes are worn, it won’t improve, but a good few taps on the motor may ‘reseat’ them for a while.
Always keep a beady eye on the temperature gauge, so as to know when and where to reach for the stick.
That may enable you to use the stick somewhere out of sight of the moronic looks. Image 8-[
