mk 2 xsara head gasket

Post by johninderbyshire »

The head gasket has gone on my 2001 xsara. It has done 83000 miles (well thats what it says on the clock) and i can't believe something else has gone wrong.
Brother in law going to fix it, although for all the parts and the head to be skimmed its still going to cost around £200.
Do we need any special tools? Anybody got any suggestions about anything else i should replace at same time?

Last 1.4 I did was on an AX GT and the only thing to watch was to make sure the seals at the bottom of the cylinder liners don't get disturbed (assuming it's an alloy block with wet liners), so don't turn the crank when the head is off, and/or secure the liners by using short bolts with big washers in the cylinder head bolt holes. You may need to replace the head bolts too - these could need a torx socket but I can't remember the size.
