C5 Security Wheel Bolt chewed up

Post by KevMayer »

I tried to see how easy it would be to take a wheel off my C5.

One bolt is a security bolt on each wheel and I have an adaptor.

But, on one wheel when I try to undo the security bolt the adaptor just jumps out and doesn't stay engaged.

So, I can't remove this one wheel.

I imediately ordered 4 new normal bolts to replace the four security bolts and tonight I have tried to change them all. I changed 3 no problem, but the dodgy bolt still would not shift. I even parked the car next to a wall and used a piece of wood and my jack to apply pressure to my ratchet. I jacked until the car was almost pushed across the drive, then I turned the ratchet and the adaptor still didn't grip.

Does anyone know whether I stand a chance of getting this bolt removed. Should I try a Citroen dealer or tyre franchise.

Sods law says that if I drive with this bolt stuck on I will get a puncture in this tyre and will be right up the creek without a paddle.

Has anyone had a similar experience.

cheers, Kev

Hi

A work colleague of mine had a company C5 with alloys. A while back he went for a new set of tyres. The tyre company could not get one of these bolts off.

A citroen dealer had nightmares with it too I can't remember all the gory details but I think a new alloy came into it

My colleague said that there is a reaction between the metal of the wheel rim and the bolt and they fuse.

Best of luck

Have you tried an impact driver? They are amazingly effective.

Hi fastandfurryous and davetd,

When you say impact driver, do you mean like the air powered tool used at a tyre factor ?

No.. the type that looks like a rather large screwdriver that you hit with a feck-off big hammer. They hit the drive in very hard while "shock"ing the drive round a bit. Highly effective on siezed/damaged fixings.

Hehe been doing the very same thing today on a Volvo, we use a special socket that has a tapered screw thread inside it, once it bites, the more pressure you put on it the more it bites into the bolt head, once its got a big enough bite on the bolt, the bolt gives in and comes undone.

All roadside assistance wallers should have these sockets onboard, if you are in a motoring club you could let your tyre down and give them a shout.

Thanks,

Just found one on ebay. A Sykes Pickavant Impact Driver.

Could be just what I need.

Thanks Dave.

I'm with Direct Line Breakdown so I could give that a try.

Where would I get a socket like the one you used. Are they available at motor factors say ?

There are cheaper ones available than this set, but they need to be good quality hard steel or they will just turn to mush.

And,

But, this advert points out that -
'Locking Wheel Nut Removers are NOT a DIY hand tool, it requires an air or cordless impact wrench to work'.

Ok, I got the locking bolt removed, but it was not easy.

I took the car to a local tyre factor. A member of the HiQ business.

They tried using the threaded socket. They had a set just the same as those shown in the link from Dave Burns. But the sockets didn't work.

The fitter tried to hammer a small Hex socket onto the end of the bolt but that didn't work either.

In the end, they resorted to their ultimate solution which was to use a mig welder to weld a bolt to the end of the locking bolt. They poured cold water over it to cool it and then turned the whole thing with a conventional socket. Eventually the bolt came out.

I passed them the replacement plain bolt and they fitted it.

They told me that locking bolts are a right pain. They have lost count of the number and how many different types they've hadto remove using different techniques. They said that those used by Citroen were the most difficult to remove because there is nothing to get a grip on. They've hadto weld before. Not only Citroen bolts but lots of other manufacturers.

My alloy wheel wasn't damaged so I paid them £20.

Now my C5 is locking bolt free.
