Hi folks
Since I got my '93 Xantia there has been a ticking noise eminating from the instrument panel, starting at around 50mph and getting quicker and louder the faster I go.
The service hist says that the previous people put it into a Cit specialist and they diagnosed the speedo cable which was changed to no avail.
Is this one of the 'common faults'?
I am thinking of removing the clocks to change some bulbs and wonder if I can lubricate the speedo from behind or something else to cure it?
Cheers
Dave

Hi Dave -
The CX & BX were reputed for their noisy ticking speedo head units on high mileage cars. It could very well be the Xantia has inherited some genes here ...
Its the mileage counter that makes the noise - it may already have a tendency to lose mileage readout. Have you noticed a slightly higher mileage on the fuel as of lately ... 8)
Facts : the mileage counter are driven by a worm gear which is worn and then starts moving back and forth on its axle. This makes the small - but very crisp and annoying tick.
You will need to remove the complete head unit and then work your way into the wormdrive.
It will be all nylon gears with small steel axes. There will most likely be room for some tiny spacers offsetting the wormdrive a wee bit on the axle - and voilá - problem gone.

I replaced dash bulbs on my old 405 and had to disconnect the speedo to get the unit out.
When I refitted it (after much swearing trying to get the speedo cable aligned with bits of string - no room for fingers) I found mine was clicking, and the mileage wasn't increasing, as Anders says.
It was simply that the cable wasn't seated fully into the back of the speedo. I basically removed the speedo unit again, and found the cable not fully clicked into situ. A bit of extra force second time round sorted it.
