I've had a persistent rattle from the front of my old ZX TD estate for the past few months. It's had all the usual suspects replaced - track rod ends, ball joints, lower suspension arms, drop links - to no avail, and was driving me mad. I've just had the anti-roll bar mounts replaced, however, and this has solved the problem at last. What a pleasure it is to drive now!
For info, the noise of failed mounts sounds like a light tap with a hammer somewhere in the region of the footwells, which only occurs when the car travels over minor ripples in the road, straight and level. It doesn't happen on bends, presumably because the anti-roll bar is under some load and is hard against the worn bearings.
Hope this helps someone else with the same problem. Looks like these mounts only last about 230,000 miles....
