Leaking hydraulic pump

Post by LeeDJC »

I noticed when changing the speed sensor the other day, that my hydraulic pump is leaking quite nicely.

I didn't have a chance to have a good look at the time, but is this a common problem, and is it relatively easy to sort out? i.e. new washers etc?

Cheers :D

Its worth examining the pump carefully for the leak. Most pumps cannot be taken apart but some of the newer ones are bolted together and if the leak is from the body it may be possible to tighten it. Other possibilities are pulley shaft (not common), outlet pipe (probably a misaligned pipe) split outlet pipe (not unknown - genuine Citroen pipes are not expensive).

The inlet usually admits air if there is a problem. If air gets in the system this way many strange things happen!

No, its not a common problem, are you sure its the pump and not the outlet connection? If it is the pump as far as I know a replacement is the only cure. You should be able to get a secondhand one for not to much money.

No, i'm not sure where it's leaking from. Pretty much the entire pump is covered in lhm though. Will have to clean it up and have a closer look.

I've been told that there is a seal kit available from Citroen for the Xantia hydraulic pumps, relatively cheaply (even here in NZ) so I'll be ordering one for mine to see if I can fix the suction leak in mine. They're also relatively easy to strip down unlike the older pumps. (One possible snag is it might be necessary to get the pulley pressed off the shaft and back on to replace the shaft seal ?)

Perhaps someone with pr.net access could see if a seal kit is listed ?

This is for the 2-port pumps found on both Mk1&2 Xantia.
The pulley on non-V6 pumps must be removed with a special puller tool.
The O-rings and capscrews are applicable for all pumps.
Note the many pump variants :!:

Can't you book in under false pretences as I did ?

Why not do a sincere & proper registration on PR-net ?

After all you are using it as thought to be used : finding parts for Citroen cars that needs to be repaired. It can only up the Citroen experience & reputation. Besides many parts are only available as genuine parts which needs to be purchased from Citroen then - Circle closed.

Hi Anders,

When I tried to book into PR-Net, it said that you had to be ‘in the trade’.
It gave a list of countries and Citroën dealers to choose from, and Australia wasn’t in it.
So, I answered the questions to ‘their requirements’. Image

Terry.
