fuel consumption: 2.1 diesel vs 2.0 petrol

Post by deian »

Hi guys,

As you are all well aware by now, I have a 2.1td it's nice and i like it a lot, but whats the 2.0 petrol like in comparison? faster, thirstier, quieter, more expensive to insure?

i see diesel prices going higher and higher now, and petrol is cheaper so if they do similar mpg then why have the 2.1td?

i do 125miles a week on a B road to and from work, and the occasional A road on the weekends and some country lanes daily.

and when my gf comes over to uni in norwich, i will be doing 660miles round trip there every couple of weeks.

so what would you guys do, keep the 2.1td exclusive or swap for a 2.0 petrol? i want a V6 though, manual though.

Thanks

Stick with the Diesel.

Diesel is between 3p and 5p more expensive than petrol. But the price difference of between 3 and 5 pence has been the same for a while.

As the price of petrol and diesel rise, if the difference in price remains the same then in reality the difference in the price of diesel is reducing as a proportion of the actual cost ( i.e. 5p is a smaller proportion of 97p than it is of 87p).

So, strangelly, as the prices rise the diesel becomes more viable.

Reverse polish notation..... I used to have a calculator that did the same thing.

cheers,

Kev

You should get about a third better fuel consumption with the diesel, the fuel would have to go up about 50% to negate the saving. My XM estate will do 40-50 mpg if you dont thrash it.

Looks like i will just buy a second car next summer, probably the 'beast ' a 24v V6 XM, probably keep it off the road so I can rip the engine out and give it the once over!

After LHM flush and change and then some front tyres in a couple of months, the Xantia I have now is spot on, no work needs doing on it, except for preventatitve maintenance.

I thought these Citroens are supposed to be troublesome.

I'm thinking about moving my V6 on if you're interested. I average 27-28mpg in mine, bit more on a run

So soon? You've only just had it right? 28mpg isn't bad though. Thanks for the offer but I don't think I'm ready for one right now. I would love the experience though. I also want to rule the world , but hey, we can't have everything can we.

I've not had it that long no. Its a stunning car though hence i am a little reluctant to get rid of it.

I want to go back to my BX's. They just appeal to me more.

Deian,

You wont get a manual V6 Xantia.. I think they were all Autos.

XM V6 manuals are like hens gold teeth.. and I wouldn;t have a 90deg V6 24v, get a leter V6 24v 60deg...

My activa gets 33 mpg on a run - 450 miles to a tank

i also have a 306TD for day to day running

but if the activa gets at least 250 miles to a tank (totally urban milage) on this tankful then the 306TD is going to go.

Hi, I have just managed to squeeze 250m out of a totally urban tankful. Wasn't much fun though! I think it worked out as a shade over 25 mpg, which isn't too bad i suppose!

Better than 18 mpg in my CX!

Speed wise the 2.0i is not that much quicker than the 2.1 TD.

quite right quackers! well spotted, and for the economy vs. speed, no point changing really is there. i still want a v6, the 60o one as citroenxm pointed out. is that the one that was in the pug 406coupe?
