Busted clutch clip!

Post by Bigjoe »

Morning folks,
Had the joy of coming home on recovery truck last night that the kids thought was great fun! all due to a busted end of a clutch cable! we went into tesco's on the way home from the garden center,i spotted a space and pushed the clutch down and Bang!!! tinkle! and a metal clip went flying across the footwell.......oh joy!
Luckily i accosted the RAC patrolman that was sitting in the carpark having a break,he confirmed what i suspected and arranged the tow truck, which arrived and got sent away again as we needed 4 seats not just 2 seats

So this had added to the already growing list of money for the MOT which due to being in serious skintville at the moment might end in the car being scrapped or sold.

Hope everyone else had a better day!? :D

Seems like a similar problem to this thread.

Where the manufacturer fits a cheap component, in what turns out to be the most stupid place/position making it more/very difficult to access when the car needs maintenance, and repair.

Surely you cant justify scrapping the car or selling it when the componenet is literally only a couple of pound and surely you can justify breaking your back to fit it yourself in order to keep the car that you know, are you with the RAC, did the recovery cost you or do you have breakdown cover?????

If you had to pay for the recovery then thats unlucky but if it was another car (other than a Citroen) and that car broke down you still would have had to pay the same....but the fix would likely cost you more than a couple of quid.

Here's a picture of the parts that cause the problem.

my zx plastic clip broke twice as the clutch was getting old and heavy (now changed)

i changed the clutch, clutch cable and then uprated this poxy rubish plastic clip with a one piece aluminium part from a place in gloucester.

the new alluminium part looks heavy enough to hang the whole of the car from!!

no more problems expected in that department......

Can you obtain contact details for that place in Gloucester... I think it would be useful to keep it on record. 8)

im trying to remember the name - i think it was somthing like gtf car parts - hes an independent citroen specialist and designed the part himself - it is very clever, you push the bullet end of the cable in and a series of collects fall into place and stop it coming back out - i wouldnt fancy trying to get the cable out of it again!!!!!!!!

Hi all

The replacement clip from Citroen is a much MORE beefier clip anyway.. so makes no difference. If your luckily enought to have both side by you can see the difference in size...

Hi all,
Thanks for your replies,i got recovered by an independant place working for the RAC so i did'nt have to pay, sorry guys i didnt mean that i was scrapping the car due to the broken cable(its the plastic bit on the cable that has snapped, not the actual clip that has broken),it needs a new rear silencer and a leak repairing on the hydractive system aswell and at the moment we really have'nt got any money that we can spend as i lost my job after christmas and my missus has been on long time sick leave due to having problems with depression since late last year so thats the reason i might have to sell or scrap it,sorry for not explaining that properly. :D

Somebody once told me that if I carried a spare clutch cable clip and it snapped, the RAc would fit it free of charge on the roadside. I'm not sure if it's true but worth a try if it ever happens again....

The Gloucester specialist is CGS Autosystems (01452-311110). I brought one of their metal clips a couple of years ago (at 105k). My clutch is still heavy but still fine at 155k. I think the clutch cable dries out. Every now and again I attempt to oil mine. That improves things for a while but the heavyness soon comes back. I wonder how many people change their clutch without needing to?
