speedo drive problem xantia

Post by jgra1 »

folks I have no speedo drive, after a clutch change some time ago. I assumed i had damaged / disturbed wiring - but when i finally got around to looking at it, it seems the speedo drive main pinion isnt turning. as I understand it, this sits around the RH driveshaft, in a housing, and is plastic. It must have been disturbed when the driveshaft went back in, or it's lugs have been broken off, sound plausible? I cant really see what else it could be?

thanks

the driveshaft dose not usualy come into contact with the speedodrive at all,as the speedodrive is driven off the diff,i would suggest you re/check the conectors in the plug block as these do give trouble when they get coroded, that is if you have a transducer powering the speedo

The early type mechanical plastic pinion drives do in fact have a habit of loosing mechanical contact with the pinion rod. This is a wellknown problem on BX.

thanks both, I will remove the DShaft and the housing for the speedo drive and see what i find.

Malcolm, there is no movement of anything where the electric speed sensor sits, i.e. with that item removed, the worm drive that is supposed to turn it is stationary. I had both wheels off ground and car in gear, running - could feel nothing.

I did get a drill on the speed sender unit and got the speedo to read, so downstream of the Sender is all ok.
