checking condition of fuel filter

Post by _kid_ »

Ive just change my fuel filter on the xantia, on the petrol model it sits next to the fuel tank on the offside.

I was surprised to see the outside of the filter nice and clean, so obviously i would like to know the condition of it, (it has not been changed in the 2 years ive owned the car)

Is there way i can tell?

i have changed it :D but i am simply curious if there is a way it can be checked, eg like a air filter which is either clean or black.

Blow thru it and judge. There will not be much flow during use - i.e. nothing like water from a tap. So it has to be well clogged not to function.

get it nice and wet with fuel and blow fuel through it in the wrong direction and see what comes out!

Easier just to replace it!

If the filter is very clogged, the engine will cut out when going at speed uphill.
That’s when fuel flow is highest, and restricted flow will show up then.

Diesel fuel filters look quite discoloured on the lower half when well used. The one out of my Xantia, which had been there an unknown time was half black and half brown.

Just tilt it so the fuel flows from the inlet side. I just replaced mine and the gasoline that came out was a dark red
