old spheres advice please

Post by Monkeyfeet »

I have a boxful of old spheres (yes, hooray) - Do I just stick 'em in the bin/ tidytip or does anyone take them in for recon? Given their weight it needs to be local of course, it just seems a waste to bin them.I 'spose it would be greener to recycle via the tiytip, if they take them.Any thoughts?

Quite a few people would recon them, seems a shame just to bin them if they were salvagable. I dont know of anyone in Bedfordshire though.

Old spheres are only worth getting regassed if you can be sure that they haven't been allowed to go completely flat. If they've been run when flat, possibly the membrane will be damaged.
At one time I used to get my BX spheres regassed, but gradually the price increased until it was almost as cheap to buy new from GSF.

They are so cheap to buy new now, I wouldn't think it would be worth the transportation cost to recon them. I deposit mine at the local recycling centre.

I've got a bagful of old injectors I dont know what to do with.

I don't suppose you have a number 4 cylinder injector from a 2.1TD with lift sensor?

Not worth re-using. Bin them as scrap metal ...

If you were in Australia, we'd kill you in the rush to get to them due to the exhorbitant prices we get charged here for them (up to A$275 each is common) so anyone with access to regassing facilities can save abundle on them.
Rule of thumb is if they show on a tester at approx. 50% or over charge retained, they're worth doing. (ie) 50 bar sphere showing say 30 bar is OK but at say 15 - 20 wouldn't risk it.

Clubs out here charge them for around $15 a sphere, mechanics $35 - $60 and some of the robbers up to $90

Geeze, I thought we had it bad here in New Zealand. I was recently quoted $187+gst each for new front Hydractive spheres, and accumulators cost around $140.

If the prices get too high you can always move over to this side of the ditch Alan....

Last year I considered importing some GSF spheres, and asked them for a quote on shipping costs. It worked out that I would need to buy at least 4 spheres at a time to save money when shipping and customs charges were accounted for...

The main reason I backed out of doing that was that GSF don't do the multilayer diaphram spheres that I wanted for the front of my car...

Where they catch us out is with freight, taxes and charges.
As an example, I buy a part for say $100, my freight is likely to be another $100, then I get hit import duties which I think is 15% so I'm up to $215 if I buy from a company not prepared to discount the VAT for an export customer (not VAT registered) I can ad another $17 to that so that's about $235, then I get hit with our GST for another 10% which pulls me up to almost $250 so my $100 purchase has increased by approx 150% since I ordered it.
I think I was once told that it costs around 65 UK pounds to send 4 spheres or $156 on todays rates.

If there were say 10 spheres that would equate to around $400 and when tested there may only be 4 worth having, so the risk factor is too high.

Doesn’t look like it, for what I know.
I haven’t had cause to buy other than routine service parts this far.
Oil and air filter: £7 and £11.
The catalytic converter has needed replacing, and they put one in of local make, nearly half the Citroën price.
The car got hit from behind a few years ago.
Insurance job, the rear quarter panel, bumper and other metal and plastic pieces around there had cost about half what the German car makers were charging, they said.
I do think that when the prices are extortionate in the UK, and in France too, so are they here.
