V6 Xantia
I've bought a V6 Xantia, and i collect it on Friday.
I am just wondering, are there any known issues that i should look out for with the V6? My dad has owned an Activa, and i have had an XM.
Was just wondering if any of you guys knew any well known issues with the V6's.
Thanks in Advance.
David.

From what I read on other forums and Citroen web pages - the v6 issues disappeared with the '92on V6 engine which is a true 60deg V6. This engine should be as reliable as the XU engines.
It is the old 90deg V6 first introduced in the XM range that is greedy on workshop hours ...

Check the water level... expansion tank prone to leak where the tank halves are joined, also check the radiator, as you look from the front into the engine bay it is prone to spring a leak towards the bottom on the right.
Brilliant car, enjoy.

Yes I think so too. My 'M' reg XM was the old V6 but both my Xantia's are the new one 'R' reg and 'X' reg.PowerLee wrote:I didnt think the ES9J4 V6 came out in 1992?

Still missing the Xantia V6
Not missing the AX - Contact:
Yes, a wonderful car indeed, problems with mine have been generally Xantia specific rather than V6 related. In fact the engine has been the most reliable part.
Had a few electrical gremlins, the HP pump packed up and the alternator toasted itself. The heater matrix leaks but only in winter when it's cold. Its had a new rad and header bottle, several sets of drop links, spheres and all the usual Xantia stuff has failed and been fixed at some point.
Currently the rear nearside electric window doesn't work, even with a replacement motor so I'm working on that one. I think there's a problem with the hydractive valves and the rear height corrector is possibly a bit sticky. The headlamp washers don't work but it's the pump packed up and I've got another one to fit. The autobox has a slight oil leak which I have yet to trace. All are work in progress but I don't seem to get much time these days so progress is slow.
Oh, and I drove it into the garden wall the other day and now I need a new N/S front bumper section. I still love it though.

It infuriates me to be wrong when I know I'm right

thanks guys. i just saw one being sold for spares on ebay due to having a faulty gearbox, that set alarm bells rining, fingers crossed.
I can't wait to collect it now! Flying from Glasgow to Gatwick, then getting the train to Horsham to collect the car, so it couldn't really be much further from home!!
Adds to the fun!
David.

If it's the red one on ebay then it's a 2.0 with a completely different box!!

The later VVT ES9J4 lump has a much easier cambelt to change then the non VVT version according to a couple of sources who work for PeugeotDHallworth wrote:i just sold a V6 xm on a 91 plate.
The engine in that growled, whereas the engine with VVT in my dads 406 Coupe purrrrrrrrrrs.
Fancied an automatic, and the fact i picked up the Xantia for £600 i couldn't really say no after seeing what they were fetching on ebay.
David.
The early ES9J4 lump is ment to be a bit to do
Autoboxes
David, I DEFINITELY don't wish ill upon you, but It SHOULD be a cause for concern, or at least something to be aware of. The auto boxes DO lose their forward drive on Xm's and Xantia's - believe me I KNOW, and have the evidence lying around the place. Certainly the Xm ones definitely go at almost exactly 120k and I've personally seen two 2.0i Xantia ones go at 100k and I don't thrash them, but do live in a hilly part of the world!!DHallworth wrote:thanks guys. i just saw one being sold for spares on ebay due to having a faulty gearbox, that set alarm bells rining, fingers crossed. It all depends on where/if the car has been serviced and maintained. The red one in Hull only made it to <84k miles and I've seen other Cit autos showing >200k so it's a bit pot luck. Mind when they're working they suit the smooth riding lopability that big engined Cits can offer...
You don't intend towing with the thing do you!?
In the very worst case scenario I've seen figures of £500 to £1500 to get the car going again. Thing is, one I bought already with a totally seized autobox had undergone a £1200 rebuild 10k miles before at a pro specialist gearbox rebuilder.
Best of luck with your new purchase!!
