Spinning door lock

Post by Jshodgson »

My passenger door lock spins round and round rather than engaging and locking/unlocking the door. Is there a way of fixing this? Alos my boot lock doe not operate the central locking - is this correct?

The locks do wear and cause this effect. Have you tried pushing the key in hard while you turn it, this sometimes helps, or you could trying spraying some WD40 into the lock, that also sometimes works. Failing that you will need a new lock barrel. I had this trouble on my XM and swapped the lock from the drivers door, which is still working OK. Does your remote locking not work?

I think the boot lock should work on the central locking, check the wiring where it goes from the body to the tailgate, the wires sometimes break here due to the continual movement.

I'll try the WD40 first but if I have no luck where do I get a new barrel? I don't have remote locking, I think it is the base model (non electric windows either)........ can I make it remote locking????

i had the same problem with my drivers door lock so i went to peugeot as my citroen garage was a wee bit out of the way and they sold me the same locks (they cum in a pack of three) for 40 pounds with 5 keys and done the job   . if i was u i would replace the lot so one key does all and there not that hard to fit :) :)

I had a similar problem with one of my keys, however, if I tried a less used (and worn) one the lock worked ok.

Pushing the worn key in hard also worked.

I suspect it is the key that is worn and thus not engaging the tumblers correctly rather than the lock

The Xantia locks are supposed to do this - it's a security feature. If the key is not pushed fully home, or does not have the correct cross features, the barrel just spins (supposed I guess to prevent you opening it with a screw driver!). Of course if the key is a bit worn, or the lock a bit sticky then it refuses to play ball when you do want to open it - it's unlikely the lock is worn, since they hardly ever get used. The best solution is to dump a load of WD-40 or similar in the lock and work the key in and out a lot of times, then make sure it is pushed well in (and the lock is in the vertical position) and it should work OK.

Richard - I was hoping someone would use that as their answer as ive just entered this thread....mine also did this on my Xantia and didnt know how to use the key 'properly' for the locks, boot included....After i realised it was a security feature i learned how to do it properly and have had no more bother!
But the OP already has had a Xantia, although he may of been using Central Locking all the time and hasnt come across this problem before!

Doesnt all Xantias come with Central Locking as standard?????

I do have central locking, it just doesn't work the boot and it isn't remote unlike my LX.

The WD40 traick seems to have worked and I think I'll also get a new key cut.

Someone suggested trying the cables into the boot as they sometimes wear and break due to all the movement. Which ones are these exactly?

Looks like the Xantia always has central locking, but not sure about remote control.
As for the boot, the central locking can lock it, but opening the boot with the key won’t ‘centrally unlock’ the doors.
Copying here from the owner’s manual:

The tailgate may be isolated from the main locking system and operated independently.
If the key is withdrawn in the vertical position: the tailgate unlocks with the doors.
If the key is withdrawn at an angle of 45° to the right: the tailgate can only be unlocked manually with the key.

Well, that surprises me. :?
It's always worked with me.
Doesn't the key come out at 45° right ?
It's always possible that it's been fiddled before you got the car.

Nope...it would never release the key at the 45o angle it talks about. :(

I want my Xantia Back
