Am new to Citroens having recently bought a Xsara SX 110 HDi with which we are very pleased. A couple of days ago I noticed that the driver's side dipped beam light were out. I thought that's easy, I will replace the bulb. I then noticed that there are two, and both are out. I checked the fuses and they are OK. My question is how on earth do you change the bulbs as they are virtually impossible to get at, especially with my fat fingers. Does the headlight unit come out easily and if not, can you remove the washer bottle filler tube, it moves around but does not appear to want to come out. Sorry for seeming so stupid but the handbook is worse than useless showing the headlight as if it is out of the car. Hope someone can help

You have to take the bumper off, and then pull the light forward. We got a revue techniques book from france, and although the writing is in french, there are some cracking pictures. if you want me to scan them and email them to you, let me know. I had mine done at the garage, and when i asked him how he did it, he said he wiggled the wire untill the right bulb wiggled, and then just pulled on the wire, which also pulled the bulb out. God knows how he got it back, but they work ok. Hope no more bulbs go soon!!!

Thanks a lot for the info. This is almost unbelievable, so much for replacing bulbs when on the road. I wonder what the legal position on this is?
I would be very grateful for the pics if you can manage it OK.

It's bad design, plain and simple. The C5 headlamp bulbs are a nightmare too.
There's no need for it - in contrast, the Mk1 Xsara headlamp bulbs couldn't be easier to replace, access behind the headlamp units is great.
Bad access to replace routine items like this just goes to perpetuate the myth that there's no point doing any repairs/DIY on a modern car. It also means that countless people drive round with one headlamp, or just the sidelights.

Went to a local long established non-franchised Citroen specialist and he replaced the bulb while I waited. Took him about five minutes. He said if you think these are difficult, then, just like Ralph said, try a C5.

A lot of headlamp bulbs are now to difficult to replace at home.
Watched a mechanic do a fat arse Megane headlamp bulb the other week.
Raise the car up on ramp, Reach up in to the black hole of the inner wing & unclip the cover, Lots of rude words as he removed the old bulb, Even more rude words as he fitted the new bulb.
Clip the cover back on, Job done
