Hi Gang,

Looking for suggestions where I can send air con compressor to be reconditioned anywhere in the U.K.

Since it would appear there is nobody local re last psoting.

Hint :

Look for aircondition (industrial) companies in yellow pages. At least they may direct you to a company doing mobile a/c in your area.

Your first post asked about air compressors... which are very different to air con compressors.

What's actually wrong with yours?

To fastand furious,

My original compressor has a rather large hole therefore unrepairable.
Obtained the exact same compressor from a scrappie and I'm considering my options:

1. Shall I fitted second hand compressor and see if everything goes alright, paying for mobile air con mechanic to do all checks and refill system to find there is a fault

2. Have second hand compressor re-conditioned followed by checks etc.

The only things that really go wrong with aircon compressors are:

Idler bearing failure (spin the pulley over and see if it's smooth and silent)

Damage due to being run low on oil.

Internal corrosion due to being stored open in a damp environment.

Has yours been stored in the dry, with plugs in it's ports? If so, then there's a good chance that it's in good condition. If it's been stored with open ports in a garage for 6 months, then forget it.

Is it still full of oil? If so, that's good (but the oil will need changing) if it's been stored with no oil in, then there's even more chance that it's innards are shot.

If you feel confident about doing the work, I'd fit the compressor (taking precautions against introducing moisture into the system) and then AS SOON AS POSSIBLE have the system vacuum tested, the compressor oil changed, and system recharged.

The cost of stripping an aircon compressor to it's component pieces and "reconditioning" it would be horrible. You'd be better off buying a known-good one, or a new one off eBay (last one of this type I think sold for about £100)

Fastandfurious,

The idle does spin and it appears the oil plug is intact put the ports were open.
It would appear to me this one is bit of a mixed bag/unknown quantity, I think I'll take chance and fit same on and get the system done properly, therefate see what happens!

Thanks

Hi Kenny

Just a few tips that you may already know but others may not .......

Before you drain the oil turn the comp over a few times then drain leave draining as long as you can, turning over now and again, refill with about
2 fl ozs of comp oil, at this point I would fit the comp on the bench and turn it over using an electric motor and belt for a couple of min's and drain again checking the condition of the oil and repeating if necessary when Happy, refill with correct amount of oil and seal ports ready to be fitted.

If it's a R12 system I would NOT convert to R134a, just recharge with R413a, I have found vehicles converted to R134a seem to have more problems.

Do you know if the old comp was starting to break up internally? if it was, it will have pushed bits of metal swarf etc into the pipe work / system which will need to be flushed, if you don't the new comp will only last a short while.

Hope this helps
Bonne Chance

Compressor

Post by KennyW »

Hi Fridgedoc,

Thanks for the info,

The oil filler plug I assume is on the main body of the compressor.

I will get some photo's and post same on forum for you to look at and comfirm it is correct.

With regards to spin comp over, again I assume you can check for any metal shavings in the oil of my damaged comp to see if system would have been contaminated.

Thus next question can system which would appear to have lost all its refrigerant and possibly have metal shavings be cleaned of same and work correctly again.

Basically I don't want to go to the trouble of doing all this when it is a waste of time.

Final question  what would you estimate the cost be.

Kind regards
Kenny
