Playing about with the subframe will just cause you much more work, the rack is bolted to it anyway, and the rack can be removed without touching the subframe.

Dave, I decided to leave this job until I've got a replacment rack available.

As a matter of interest I changed the lower engine mount on Sunday and removed the right hand driveshaft to remove the casting from the car.

With the driveshaft removed you get quite a good view of the hydraulic connections to the rack. I would fancy my chances of undoing them with a flared spanner.

I'll see how I get on when the time comes but I might remove the drivehsaft if I'm struggling.
