Xantia 2.1TD immobliser (keypad) problem

Post by mipster »

My 2.1TD xantia (R reg MK1) is refusing to start, the keypad is showing both the green and red lights.

I've checked the double relay next to the ecu, it's got 2 earths and 4 live pins but the live pins are only 4v, is this normal? I checked with the ignition off. Battery is fully charged

Other things I've been through are:
  • earths, gearbox and main collection by the battery
    fuses
    o/s and n/s multipin connectors
keypad connector, 1 pin at 12v plus 1 more when the ignition is on
battery disconnected for a few hours
Has anybody got a link to a decent wiring diagram?

I'm starting to get a little concerned that this may not be a simple or cheap problem,

Have a good search of this site - there are details on how to remove the keypad controls from the pump and what the wiring functions are. They are probably for a xantia 1.9TD but I expect the pumps are the same.

the pump is completely different on a 2.1.
the 4 battery feeds should be over 12v so this is your problem.most likely the wires are corroded in the loom that runs under the radiator.the easiest option is to get a wiring diagram & re wire the feeds.

The MkI Xantia is reputed for its earthing points under the battery. Remove battery from tray and clean up all earth points.
(if not already done)
Further the +12V power distribution terminals are a good point to start looking. One bad point here - and you have got loads of functions fed with a weak (i.e. very low) 12V supply.

Thanks Wheeler,

I haven't got a wiring diagram but it's good to no that 4v isn't normal.

Getting to the underside of the raditor may be a task. It's been stood for 10 days (not quite sunk though) and I parked facing up a sloping drive with the rear bumper touching the garage door.

Anders, saw your reply after posting mine.

This is my second Mk1 xantia and the under battery earths were my first point of call. On my car there aren't any, I don't know if it's the 2.1 or because it's a very late MkI but all the earths are on a plate bolted to the wing near the battery (next to the preheater box).

power distribution terminals will be my next point of call.

I hope she isn't playing up because I told her it's time to see the man from the ministry :)

There is also a loom behind the radiator bottom, visible from under the bonnet, and it's also a favourite for very strange electrical faults.

Well after many hours of investigation I can report that the error was a damaged wire in the o/s wing.
This what caused the voltage drop to 4v, the wire had got damp and had corroded.

On the plus side I've cleaned up all of connectors and earths along the way and learn't more than I wanted to about how my xantia is wired up. All I need to do is finish up refitting the fuse box and she can go for her MOT.

Thanks to all,
