Hey,
I think I have one or more worn engine mounts. The car (xm '95 16v) starts vibrating when revved up to about 2500 rpm at standstill.
When cornering in third gear (LHD car) the lever moves forward (towards engine) when taking a right turn and backwards when turning left. It's most noticable in third gear. Does anyone recognise this or have any similar experiences? If so which engine mount should I be looking at?

Worn engine supports??

Niek,
Can't speak specifically about an XM but we did have a CX that showed similar symptoms caused through an engine mount under the motor which was mounted on the crossmember going soft & gooey. This also caused the mount on the end of the gearbox to sit on it's lower edge (it's sort of like a bolt sitting in the centre of a rubber mount).
The engine vibration transmitted right through the car, & the gear lever not only wandered around but the engine could be clearly felt through it. I mention it because it was a #$%&^(*%# of a thing to find being hidden away under the motor as it was & without a manual, we changed the end one & wondered why it made so little a difference.
Hope that's a bit of help to you.

Hi Alan,
I was under there two weeks ago changing my speed-sensor and had a feel around. I think I know which mount you mean, when I tried moving the engine about by hand, I saw that mount flexing (I don't know what it's called, rubbering about??? <img src=icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle> ). Basically I'm asking how soft is such a mount supposed to be? Should you be able to move the engine around by hand?

Niek,
On the CX, the engine couldn't be moved by hand mainly due to the weight and the fact it's held in position to a point with driveshafts etc. The biggest trap with it was that it looked OK until we hitched a sling on in desperation, lifted it slightly and after much swearing an major loss of blood, removed it for inspection & found the hidden side was so soft that it was almost as soft as foam rubber. When the weight of the engine was placed on it, it simply flattened down on that side but still appeared to be OK when a light was shone up on to it. When compared to a new one, when it was fitted, there were major differences not noticeable whilst the old one was still in the car.
Anders from Denmark who was on the old BX Board, was once having similar problems on his CX and fast running out of ideas with a similar vibration. In desperation he tried this on my suggestion & sure enough.......same thing; it's that deceptive to find.
