Thanks clogzz,

Saw the pics hopefully I can sort it out, if nessecary I will take pics and add same to forum for othe people.
It looks like I'll have to remove the dash again to fix it.!!!!!!!!!!

KennyW.

As an aside I think I've got the faulty internal fan problem so whilst the dash is out I might as well do that. I've read all the hints and tips and it seems an easy job!

Clogzzs,

Does it matter what order the cables are attached to the relay ?
Is it a 5 terminal relay?

Yes, it matters.
If we're talking about the relay to modify the supply to the blower motor, rather than the cooling fan control relays, then the relay is a 4-pin type.
There is a drawing somewhere on it, don't remember where, that indicates how to wire it.
Where it shows __/ __ the new supply wire and the thick red wire to the fan have to be connected, and here it doesn't matter which one where.
The coil hopefully has a + symbol for one terminal, and that's where the thick red old supply wire gets connected to operate the relay.
The last post is for the earth, going to the metalwork of the car.

heater blower wiring diagram

Post by KennyW »

Thanks Clogzzs,

I've been looking on the site but can't find the wiring diagram as well. I've seen it but can't remember where! (Old age maybe!!!!)

AlanS mentioned a link to www.geocite.com but I failed to get the file.

If anybody has the file or the site's correct web address please post it.

Thanks

Can't make sense of the 'geosite' link either.

Do you mean the wiring diagram for the relay modification ?
If yes, it's the 2 circuit pictures posted here:

http://www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/v ... hp?t=17322, 4th post.

The modification is the difference between the two pictures, being the addition of the relay and fuse.

Here's my excel wiring diagram:

Fan wiring Diag

I would do as per the pictures in the aircon thread - cut the plug off the ignition side, then crimp terminals onto the loose plug and the wires to/from the ignition switch. Connect the new terminals to the relay, and add an earth wire from the relay to somwhere handy. There should be a wiring diagram on the relay which shows how to wire it up.

PS - Kenny - I live in Lanark, so might be able to help you with it if you get stuck

Ignition switch by pass

Post by KennyW »

Thanks Richard ,

I think I'm getting my head around the wiring, but a couple of questions.

1. The new wire everyone is talking about runs from the cigarette lighter through a 30 amp fuse in-line to the heater blower, does this connect to the rely?
As my model/year has a relay already fitted to wiring.

2. Is that the feed line which runs through the relay to the load or visa versa
Excuse my ignorance but the wiring diagrams in the Haynes manual are confusing.
Usually after much studing of said diagrams I can figure it out.

Maybe an important point but my Xantia is a mark2 estate TD 1.9 with air/con.

Also my french is in its infant stages and it is harder to try and understand car terminology on the site ( Must pay a really good french dictionary.

Anybody with any thoughts or suggestions will be appreciated.

Cheers,

KennyW

Kenny,

I had a look at the thread with the pics and wiring diagram, and couldn't really figure it out either  While it seems in the pics they have spliced the relay inbetween the connector block 2VMR and the ignition switch, this is not what the wiring diagram shows :?

Now, the problem is that the ignition switch is being asked to switch the full 30A of the blower and HRW which burns the contacts out in the switch, especially as the contact goes off when you crank the engine. What you need to do is help the ignition switch by using a relay instead. Provided the switch is still working some of the time it will almost certainly be able to handle enough switching current for the relay. This is what I would do:

Find the connector block, separate it, and find out which is the live wire, and which the 'load' wire. Cut the wire on the load side between the connector and the ignition switch, and crimp a connector on each end. Strip about 1/4" of the insulation on the live wire (again between the connector and ignition switch) fold it double and crimp a connector on here also. Now connect the double wire to one side of the switching circuit on the relay, the load wire (connector side) to the other side of the relay switched circuit, the load wire (ignition switch side) to one end of the relay operating coil, and an additional wire from the other side of the switching coil to earth. Reconnect the brown connector! Now when you switch the ignition on the relay should click and the blower should be live. You will only need to run a new power supply to the relay if the ignition switch is completely burnt out and not able to switch the relay. If you use insulated connectors and position the relay carefully you shouldn't need to install any additional fusing.

As to the additional relay - er don't know! However, on mine (97 with climate control) the fan only comes on when the engine is running, which suggests that there is a relay in there somewhere which is triggered by the alternator output. It's my understanding that the ingition switch still carries the full current though. It's possible however that by the Mk11 Citroen had installed a relay similar in function to that I've described above to take the load off the ignition switch. Actually - just remembered I've got Autodata at home and that claims to have wiring diagrams in it - I'll have a look later and see if I can figure it out!

Translation of French in photos:

Connecteur marron vers neiman

Couper les deux fils rouge pour récupérer le connecteur du neiman
Cut the two red wires to retrieve the ignition switch connector

If someone can explain how to erase the French text to insert English, please let me know, because the experiments haven't paid off this far. :?

Xantia - Heater

Post by KennyW »

Thanks to everyone who has contributed, especially Clogzz for the translation.
One final point are all the Xantias which are having the internal heat problem Mark 1's because mine is Mark 2 and as a relay fitted according to the wiring diagrams in the Haynes manual in approximately the same position as mentioned in the texts?

No troubles for the translation, you're welcome. :)

All Mk I, and most of the first year Mk II's needed modifying.
From 1999, they're supposed to be no longer 'affected'.
