Bx 150A carburettor

Post by Niek »

Hi,
Can anyone tell me whether the carburettor used on a BX '87 with 150A engine (carb type Solex 30-30 Z2) is the same as that used in a visa/C15 of about the same vintage? Well actually, what other cars (peugeots) is this carb used on? Or what other carb can I use on my Bx?
Allright I'll explain
Our Bx has a long history of sometimes all of a sudden not working properly, it starts burning too much fuel (black clouds behind the car) and not idling unless you add choke (even if the engine is hot) I first suspected the whole ignition system/coil/air filter etc....
In the end it turned out (I'm almost 100% sure) to be the hose used for the oil breather pipe. The hose wasn't meant to be used in an oily/petroly(??) environment. Result, it started cracking up (Actually when I realised this it was almost gone allready and God knows how long it's been on there) and flooding my carb with little pieces of rubber. This clogs up the carb and the engine runs like cr*p as a result. I replaced the hose, cleaned the carb three times because the pieces kept coming but its still comes back. My guess is there are still lots of pieced in the carb, in places I can't reach. So I've decided to get another carb and check my theory, they can't be that expensive.

If the Haynes Carburretor manual is to be believed, this exact model of carb was only fitted to the BX14 - the BX14E and RE had the 32/34 Z2, and the 150-D engined AX 14, C15 1360 and pug 205 had 34 PBISA 12 variants, as did the Peugeot 205 14GR.
The 150A engine seems to be unique to this particular model of BX.
There doesn't seem to be an equivalent Weber either - except maybe the Weber 35 IBSH 20/21 fitted to the 150B engine in the Visa/Pug 205 with engines in a higher state of tune (GT, XS, XT models etc).
Not much help, I guess...

Thanks David,
Got a carb from a 150J engine (Bx 14E I think) it is the same carb but has an extra vacuum hose connection (some valve which allowed for a better burning of the carbon gasses (don't know if it's CO2 or CO)). I plugged the connection and it was good. Problem's still not sorted though. It seemed like it last night, but this morning it was cr*p again
I'll get a garage to look at it because I haven't got a clue anymore.

My mum drove an early (1984) BX 14 for years and it had symptoms similar to this (ie black smoke, not idling without choke) and it turned out to be the carb float sticking.
It tended to happen mainly after a longish run, when the engine was allowed to cool down, then restarted.
A few taps on the side of the carb with a screwdriver handle used to cure it - temporarily !
Could be worth a try?

Hi guys,
It's fixed (I think) this could be the first time in two years that the car continues to run well. Looks like we'll be keeping her for some more time then...
It turned out to be the idle-valve which unlike the name Mr. Haynes gave to it doesn't do anything for the idling of the car, but shuts off fuel supply when the car is shut off to prevent it from "running wild" (not a clue as to how that's called in english). Either the valve or the connection to it was faulty resulting in the valve sometimes shutting itself with the engine running, no idle without choke (overrunning the whole idle setup), stalling etc... I cut the needle in the valve off so that it doesn't do anything anymore and she's been running fine since .
