Oil consumption vs engine temp.

Post by alan s »

Just a point brought up by someone in Oz a couple of weeks ago.
The 19 TZi and TRi of the 1989 onwards vintage, seem prone to using oil.
Theories expounded have included things such as a glazing of the bore due to Aussie mechanics working on this theory that an extra 5 or 10 degrees of ambient temperature converts to massive heat problems and so they use a thicker low end oil (up to 25W-60 at times) and that this could also cause glazing of valve stems and allow the seals on them to not seal efficiently.
We have a '92 TZi that has this problem and although I've systematically gone through the ritual of backing off downhill & hitting the accelerator at the bottom, I still can't get a ball of smoke that I would expect with dodgy valve stem seals. The car does puff a little smoke on initial start up & changing to a thinner lower end oil has improved things.
I intend changing the thermostat in the next few days as I feel that the engine runs far too cold & I have no doubts that the thermostat is caput. I'm thinking that as the engine will puff a little smoke on initial start up & doesn't seem to do so if left running for a while to get hotter, that if the engine is brought up to normal operating temp faster & kept there, then this hopefully will reduce or eliminate the oil useage.
Has anyone else evr taken this route & if so what was the result?
In any case, I'll post when I do it & see if there's any difference.
BTW; I reckon I can win the Pools this week also <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> <img src=icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle>
