cooling fans

Post by WELSHVIKING »

Hi, Just been doing a bit of work on my xantia estate sx td 1996
I have now got both front cooling fans working 100% when the air con is operating ( replaced 2 knackered relays ) what i need to know is should any of the fans operate when i am on auto climate control, it does not seem like they are working but when i switch the air con button in they are ok again, or should they only operate when air con is switched on and when the temperature gets too high as any other car...

Auto climate control uses the aircon too.

If the cars hot & you set the auto climate control to the coldest setting you can then the aircon should kick in.

All the auto climate control does is try to keep the temp of the cabin to whatever the driver has set, It can either heat it up or use the aircon to cool it down.

When its set to auto you might find the aircon doesnt run all the time, It will just run when the climate control system needs it to cool the cabin down.

It might be a bit to cold outside for the aircon system to work today though

On the Mk I, the air conditioning will only work if the aircon switch is on.
At least, mine is like that. :?

The 'auto' position seems to affect the interior fan speed only.
When I bought the car, I expected the 'auto' position to take care of the lot. :(
Since the aircon didn't work like that, I got told that I had to switch it on with the aircon switch.

The Mk II has heater control settings that will turn on the aircon.
The one I know of, is that setting the flow to 'windscreen demist' will turn on the aircon.

Both fans must spin at the low speed when the aircon is on.

Hi, I have also got a mark 2 xantia ( in the garage waiting for me to work on it ) but with that one the cooling fans work when,
The aircon is on,
when aircon is off but heater controls at windscreen demist,
when auto climate controls chosen,

so i guess the mark 1 is different but it must be ok as both fans work a treat when the aircon is on, it is just different for the window demist and auto climate........Thanks for your replys...Colin

The fans spin on demist on the Mk II because going to demist automatically turns the air conditioning on, and therefore also the cooling fans.

And here's a taste of what's to come, the dash job:
