Technical Diesel Question - ZX

Post by sooty »

A question for you Technical Heads.
I've recently noticed that there a lot of movement on the little short rod with nylon ball joints towards the rear of my Lucas injector pump, part of the throttle linkage.
What its for and what's it do ?, how critical is it to requiring repairs.

I don't know - but if I made a guess, I would say that since the ball-jointed lever is connected to the accelerator lever, the other end is working on an automatic advance mechanism for injection timing.

Well thats one thought, but older engines with this type of pump didn't have this feature, and its basic design hasn't changed in donkeys years so I assume timing advance is taken care of within the original design of the pump, but then those early engines were not designed to rev to these new limits so it must be an extention of that somehow.
My theory is that because whatever this lever operates is close to the transfer port, it probably alters its size to accomodate the higher modern engine speeds thus preventing high speed fuel starvation.
Are there any specialist looking in that can explain it<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>
But a word of warning, these pumps don't seem to need that much of an excuse to run away with your engine, so if there is a likelyhood of this lever becoming detached it may be wise to get it sorted early on.

Thanks for your input.
But I have a feeling this link is something to do with the fuel injection timing with a given amount of throttle, as with the ignition advance and retard on the petrol engine distributor vacuum system of the older models.
I am to have this link replaced to ensure the correct injector pump operation.
Thanks

Whatever the link rod is called or what's it do, the repairs has certainly improved the performance.
Probaly slightly advanced the timing?
