Folks,
Haynes and Russek seem to address the BE3 only.
Is the plug on the front side of the casting, up by the regulator?
I've found one there with a copper washer, taken it out, but it is around 2
inches long, and threaded into something steel, rather than the alloy
casing.
I recall a horror story of a Simca gearbox losing some kind of vital
spring inside due to mistaken removal of what appeared to be a drain plug.

If it would help to have a look at the partsbook it can be found:
http://www.tramontana.co.hu/citroen/
Follow the link just below the red line - both series 1XM and series 2 are there. Big files which will download on Mozilla Firefox but not IE if you are on dialup. (1650 odd pages each)
