Annoying low pressure fuel pump?

Post by user_3150 »

Hi everyone, getting a bit fed up with the pump being noisy (humming + vibrations in the car). Firstly are they easy to change? Also if it's noisy is it also self destructing? Also is this the correct GSF part N18369 (it looks right). Thanks in advance as always. Almost forgot, it seems to happen on long runs of if I give it some beans.

I dont have any personal experience of these pumps, but I have read that they can be unreliable and that when failing they can produce metal filings which dont do the rest of the system any good.

I just paid £230 to have my HDi 110 pump changed and it still makes a noise sometimes. I wonder if there is anything else causing the noise like the filter. Is it also a regulator?

Have you had a look for fuel pipes that might be amplifying the noise of the pump?
It's not a bad job to change the pump it's just a bit of a fiddle getting the fuel sender O ring secure whilst tightening it all together.

These are the reasons I am unsure about doing the job. On one hand I might still end up with the same problem but if I don't I may cause possible damage to the rest of the system or have a breakdown. Or am I just being a bit paranoid. Also I have had a listen to the pump when it's not vibrating and it seem's very quite so I don't think it's being amplified in anyway, but I could be wrong.

My 110bhp hdi xantia made all the noises that you have mentioned and it still did when I sold it 40,000 miles later. I would however put an clear inline filter on the fuel supply in the engine compartment. That way you would be able to see metal filings that Peter.N. mentioned earlier. :)

Alec don't be too worried about doing a pump change, just take your time and make sure you have a new O ring seal before you start.

Those fuel pumps do give trouble and tend to die suddenly and quietly.

If its suspect, change it and keep it as a spare.

What I will do is start with is the in line filter I think. Then when funds permit and the weather gets warmer and drier I will get the pump done. Thanks for the replies. Just wanted to see if failure is immanent but it looks like it could go either way.

Small update on the noisy LP pump problem. Since having the pump changed initially it still occasionally made the vibrating noise after a long run or a wee hammering, but in the last few days it has hardly occured at all. I'm a bit paranoid about it now always listening for it but it definately is occuring much less if at all. Could it be cured?
