Mine, with a new thermostat, runs at about 82 degs normally. (Just over-centre on the gauge) In traffic the fan starts at just over 90.

I'm not Mr. Burns <img src=icon_smile_shy.gif border=0 align=middle> but can confirm that it's a two speed setup, and by '97 degrees the fan goes to high speed. (never happened to me yet actually)

Ok, now I DO want to know! My car runs at 60c normally (motorway) and about 70/80c in slow traffic. The fan cuts in at about 82c and stops at 75c. I drive a Xantia, 1.8i desire, 77k miles.
DO I have to worry about my thermostat now or is this perfectly normal? Bit worried about the remark regarding engines running best at 80c based on fuel consumption. Is this the same for petrol and diesel cars (don't think so). By the way, still doing 37mpg with mostly motorways!

Replace the thermostat, the temperature is too low.

I think everybody should replace the thermostat once it's about 5 years old (yeah I'm two years over date as well and running too cold <img src=icon_smile_sad.gif border=0 align=middle> ) After all they are cheap and easy to replace.
The benefits are great, better fuel consumption and it's alot better for the engine (allow it to heat up before trashing it!!) and of-course impress everyone you take with the speed at which Citroens heat up (always trying to create the most comfortable environment possible <img src=icon_smile_approve.gif border=0 align=middle> )

Ok, thanks Alan! Have to buy a Hays manual now as I have no idea where to look for. I will have a look at the online shop of Andyspares later on to see if they have a thermostat for me. Not in the mood to go to the garage again as I already spend over 1,000 quit in the last month (timing belt (72k service), catalic converter, rest of the exhaust system, windscreen trim, etc).
Anyone in the Northampton area who is willing to help me out (I buy you a pint after it is done at least of course).

I had a look at the shop and found this part:
N17628 THERMOSTAT XANTIA 2.0 16V
Will this thermostat be ok for my 1997, 1.8i, 16v or do I have to find a different one?

Funnily enough, my own 1.8i 16v Xantia (1998) has appeared to run cool - 60-70 degrees - from new. Changing the temp gauge sender a couple of years ago made no difference, but as the fans kick in when the car has been at standstill for some time it wasn't worth investigating further. I just assumed that the temp gauge isn't accurate.
A couple of questions:
1) Is it likely that the gauge could just be reading wrong?
2) Where is the thermostat on this engine? The top hose is connected to the housing with what appears to be a spring clip rather than a jubilee clip (not unlike an overgrown version of the clip on the electrical connections to the various senders). If I disconnect the hose here, will I find the 'stat tucked away behind it or is there further unbolting to do?

According to "Revue Technique" the thermostat on diesel 1.9, 2.1 and 2.0 HDi engines should open at 83 degrees. On petrol it starts to open at 89 degrees and is fully open at 99 deg. On autos it opens at 83 degs. Quick test can be done by taking thermostat out and putting in a pan. If it opens as water reaches boiling point it works, if it is stuck open it don't work! I would have thought that if car is running at a temp significantly below these temps the thing is stuck open or temp gauge is c**p. Might be worth testing - new thermos are only a few quid.
