Xantia Wheel Bearing 2.0SX

Post by Salmond »

Have just acquired a 94 2.0 SX Xantia.
There is a rumbling noise coming from the rear near side wheel that gets louder as you pick up speed.
I suspect that this is a shot rear bearing.
If this is the case and I jack the car up should I expect the wheel to wobble slightly.
Also I have already got some quotes from various spares shops. The prices range from £50-£100 so if you have a similar problem shop around!

If it is a shot rear bearing it will rumble a bit before you can detect any movement. Jack it up and give the wheel a spin. Surprised it wasn't picked up at its last MOT.

MOT was last March. Might explain why it wasn't picked up.
Must admit that I am a bit alarmed by the extent of diferent problems raised in this forum.
Might explain the depreciation.
Thanks for the info.

Ooh, I don't know about that. Bigger Citroens just appeal to the sort of people who like knowing about the technical aspects of their cars. My N-reg Xantia's had a few of the usual suspension probs over the years, but on balance it's been more reliable than practically any other car I've ever had, so the running costs are pretty reasonable.
If you want to see some real depreciation, check out the secondhand prices for two year old Mondeos - most of which have totally ignorant owners!

Alright guys, retract comment on depreciation. Just seems like you get a lot of bang for your bucks (on the SX anyway).
