MOT emissions reading

Post by soupy_sam »

What is the normal average reading for a Xantia 1.9 TD on the emissions test?
After the 3 tests mine had an average reading of 2.4 is that good or bad???

Afraid that's bad. Mine passed on 1 test, didn't see the result but there was no visible smoke, and I would have expected a result of <0.5, and probably <0.1. At 145k, it would probably benefit from a new set of injectors! A pass is a pass, mind you....

Diesel's benifit from a good thrashing on the way to the test centre as it gets rid of the soot lying in the exhaust system which is very often the cause of an excessivly high smoke reading, especially if the car has been driven gently for some time. With all that low speed torque available, probably the onlt time your engine reaches full revs is on the MOT test.

2 yrs ago mine passed at 0.85.
Last year it was 2.60.Although it was over due a service at the time.If i put in some STP or Wynns injector cleaner, you can really see the difference for a while smoke wise.I`m up & down the motorway most days,or do a fair run to work,so theres hardly a day that the car is driven "gently".
My MOT is a week tomorrow,so will let you know the outcome.

These are the average readings for my 2.1 Xantia for the past five years. The readings were all done at 80C and on the same machine. 40K .80; 50K 1.95; 63K 1.88; 75K 2.76; 87K 1.52 My opinion is that the differing readings reflect the amount of Millers's Dieselclean or Redex that happened to be left in the tank, and how the car had been used during the previous few weeks, ie: pulling the caravan.

Whats your mileage soupy sam?? Has it gone up a lot since your profilewas last changed?

Mine started to get smokey after 200,000 miles, and the emissions were creeping up. The MOT before last it had to have the repeated revvings and purgings to get through.

Before this years test I did the injectors, and it sailed through on fast-pass with a nice low reading.

If your mileage is high, and the usual pre test treatment of Italian tune-up, new oil, filter changes and additives are no longer working, it may be time for an injector overhaul. They don't last forever and you should get change from £150.00 or so- and thats cheaper than replacing spark plugs on a petrol engine over the same distance!!

Here's the link to the MOT manual, the fail level is 2.5 for n/a engines, 3.0 for turbos.

I don't know how far the EUization of different countrys is coming along, over here in Sweden we had general K-factor levels until this year - they are now idividual and according to the manufacturer for each model and year- supposedly a EU normalization. My XM TD2.5 passed last year after a good few thrashes at 2.8 (of 3.0 allowed). this year the level had been reduced to 1.5, but due to checking the pump timing (changed cam belt!), oil and filter change, air filter change and a good thrashing on the way to the test, it passed with flying colours - 0.8. (and it's done 300 000 km!)

There are a good few things that effect the soot level! both oil and oil filter, air filter amongst other things.

Emission problems on TD's in the past have allways benefited from a dose of 'Forte' it is not easy to come by but it is superb. A good run and your figures will reduce (assuming that you do not have worn or leaky injectors). The cost is around a tenner. Worth a try!
Cheers!

I got a can of Forte in the summer off the home tune man who came to sort out the wifes Fiesta.Cost £10,but well worth it.It reduced the smoke on mine quite a bit.Mine is not overly smokey, puts a bit out on start up,& a bit when you boot it,but i shall put a can of treatment in this w/end when i fill up,& another in on Thurs for the test on Fri. :)

MOT Retest pre test I had a drive up the motorway and gave the old girl her head lots of crap out of exhaust.

Mot emmisions average 0.29 seems a good run sorted it.

Passed the MOT this morning no probs.Need to get a new center exhaust section as it has split/cracked where it joins the back box  .A bit of paste stuck to it at the MOT station was ok though :D .It was`nt blowing to bad.
Anyway, the smoke test was down on last year(2.60),but still high at 2.36.But it passed ok.I put some aditive in & thrashed it in 2nd gear before i got there,so that may have helped. :)
