Miles on a full tank of Diesel

Post by docbrown »

I have a 1998 xantia 1.9td

I have monitored my fuel consumption on the last 2 full taks and have found the following:

1. a total of 530 miles equating to 43mpg
2. a total of 470 miles equating to 35mpg

I usually drive around the city, not really stop start but rarely travelling over 40mph

does anyone think this is reasonable economy?

Yes - the Xantia is a heavy car - weighs more than a quarter of a tonne more than a similar BX, and its performance isn't that good so you are going to use considerable power to get it moving - even round town. Cold weather won't help either - how far have you driven it before the temp gauge reads normal?

Having said that I don't expect a petrol would give more than 25 under similar conditions.

That equates to 48/49mpg - which for an HDI and warmer climate is about right.

'95 TD

10 miles to work and back through town in the rush hour Circa 34 mpg
Off down the motorway at 65/70mph for 200+ miles 48mpg or better.

Cold weather can make a 10 - 15% difference.

My 97 TD est does about the same as yours Doc brown.Sometimes a bit more.I average about 44 mpg at the moment, doing a fair few miles a week.400-500m a week.Thats a mixture of motorways, fast A roads, stuck in traffic.I do have a bit of a heavy right foot when conditions allow.
In the summer with the a/c on all the time i was getting about 38 mpg.
Even before i had it boosted the mpg was about the same.

Also i tend to fill up about 80 miles after the fuel light has come on.Brimming the tank. But i did manage to get 135 miles!!! out of it once after the light came on playing "fuel light bingo".So i could maybe add a few mpg to the above figure. But normally about 44 mpg.

My HDi 110 does 560miles without the fuel light coming on. It usually averages about 47-49mpg, but can drop to 45mpg if given some stick.

Fuel gauges are wildly inaccurate, mine reads empty and the light comes on when i still have loads of fuel. with the light on I have never managed to get more than 38-40 litres in..But it should hold about 54?

The only fair test it to brim the tank, zero the milometer, run for a few days, then brim it again, check the number of miles covered and you know what is does to the gallon.

One thing that can make a major difference to the economy of a TD is the fitting of a turbo boost gauge. It alters your driving style a lot, and you start to notice the massive difference in economy between using boost, and not using it.
This is not a signature.

Fuel consumption is mainly determined by your driving style, age (although not necessaraly!) and terrain. I am old and drive an XM 2.1td Manual estate on mostly rural roads (although I do have to go to the metropolis of Exeter tommorow, which has turned into London since they moved the weather centre there) and average 40 - 45mpg, but on our fairly regular visits the the north of Scotland 50+ is the order of the day, giving 800 - 900 miles on a tankful (17 1/2 gallons) depending on how low you dare let it go. I dont drive slowly, but then I dont drive all that fast either, I endeavor to stay within the limit, but I dont generally accelerate hard, thats what drinks the fuel. You will learn that, if you do what fastandfurrious says, and fit a boost gauge.

My 1.9TD does 41-45mpg depending upon the type of road and level of abuse it gets. I do quite a lot of motorway miles and reckon cruising at 65 gives 45mpg, cruising at 75-80 gives 41mpg.

My HDi averages around 50 mpg week in week out. Admittedly on a rural run with only a small amount of town running. Not bad though for such a big car.

MPG's

Post by johnway »

Hello,
My 1997 VSX 1.9 TD Xantia Hatchback returns at least 45 mpg every tankful whereas my 110 HDI LX C5 Estate manages 49 mpg +.
Love that C5 (especially as the heater and air con work!!)
