AX gear ratios

Post by Quinny »

I race an AX in autograss,in the class 4 category, which for those that don't know, has a class engine limit of 1130cc.

My enigne is that of a Saxo,(Which is the same as the AX,is it not?) with the AX GT head on it,currently running a 38dgas Weber, but next year is being changed to a pair of dcnf's,with manifold,a lairy cam,and some porting and polishing.

Now,I am being told that there may be a gearbox which has a taller 1st and 2nd gear ratio, than the standard gearbox.

If so,what AX/Saxo will have such a gearbox, and would there be any unforseen difficulties in fitting such a box,or is it a straight swap?

Is that the technical term for it?

You will probably find that the cars with taller gearing will be bigger engined, but non-sports models.

In the case of the Paxo, I think there was a 1.6 model which wasn't a vtr/vts etc.. model.

Best thing to do would be to check the Haynes BOL, as these usually have listings for gear-ratios, and what boxes have these ratios. Unfortunatley it's usually then a scrabble round breakers yards looking for gearbox codes.

There are a number of other cars in the PSA group that will also have this same engine and box arrangement... possibly BX14? small engined 306's? I'm sure someone else will know what the Gearbox type is and where else it was fitted.

Thanks F&F.

When I bought the car last year,it had only 1st and 2nd gear in it, (Which is all we use in autograss.) but I'm unsure what the ratios are, hence the need for a possible box with taller gearing.

The other alternative, would be to have it to a gearbox specialist, but I want to keep the cost down, that's why I'm exploring alternatives.

Quinny,
how did you get your DGAS to work well with such a small engine?
I have one on my 205 xs, with the 1.4 engine and I have had a right old time getting rid of the flatspot caused by lack of sufficient engine vacuum at low revs.

It is pretty good and now and flies under full throtlle.

No problemo......

Going back to my original question, the engine is the 1124cc unit, with a welded diff for traction, however, has the 1360 head on it,with the GT cam in,a home made free flow exhaust, the 38 dgas, and a K&N filter.

But,my car has had a very good rolling road session at the beginning of the season, way back in March, which eliminated any problems with it.The 4 holding nuts at the bottom of the carb were loose, letting in too much air.Now the seasons over, more mods are planned for next year.

So,the answer to your question is,get it on the rollers, and pay you wedge,(Mine was £60.) and hopefully solve your flatspot. Also,if you know of a rolling road, who is a whizz with Weber's,that will help too.

You don't say where your at.If you reveal that,I may be able to get the information for you,but can't promise.

Hi,
I am in Tunbridge Wells, Kent. I did get it on a rolling road and that did no good whatsoever. Through an extensive period of trial and error and advice from a great guy in the states, I have re-jetted the carb so that the flatspot is virtually eliminated. Prior to that, I changed and checked pretty much everything to do with the carb, but my problem was in the jetting.

How much power did yours record at the RR session? Mine got 106bhp at the flywheel.
