RE: Citroen XM or Peugeot 605 2.1TD engine??

Post by gerardh66 »

hi guys,

Would be nice to get some feedback on what is the better engine,
a Citroen XM or Peugeot 605 2.1TD engine?
I have recently purchased a N-reg 605 which suffered cambelt failure.
I have a choice of buying a P-reg Citroen XM 2.1TD engine which has covered 73k for £200
or a K-reg Peugeot 605 2.1TD engine which has covered 82k for £225.

I believe both are pretty much identical engines, but is one more economical than the other?
Also, would I encounter problems having to switch parts over if I decided on the XM engine?
I would rather the XM engine as it is cheaper, 4 years newer
and has covered less miles, although it has sat for three years in a garage!!

I thank anybody in advance for any expert knowledge/advice,

regards, Gerard

You might just find that the later 2.1 has electronic control through an EPIC pump whereas the earlier one will have the Bosch or CAV pump. I shouldn't think your N reg 605 will have an EPIC pump so maybe the earlier engine would be more straight-forward to fit.

hi JohnD

OK thanks for that.
A friend will replace engine and seems not too bothered
about changing parts over if necessary.
So, bearing that in mind, would I be best to go for the XM engine?
Also, I still have the blown engine from 605 for parts.
What's your valued opinion.

Thanks again, I really do appreciate the feedback
as I am still undecided as to which engine to go for
but I am under pressure to make a prompt decision.

Regards, Gerard

dose thje pug have a belt driven vaccum pump for the servo,im not sure where the hydraulic pump is driven from on XM,if its from the gear box end of the engine,it may well be a diferant cam shaft that has a pully on the end,but the pug might also can you confirm this

If he buys the XM engine he will get a gearbox as well, if it doesn't make more than £200 on e-bay. I know, I'm selling it!

Just a PS to Gerard

Get your friend to look at the picture on e-bay to make sure it will do. As was mentioned, the 1.9 engines have a drive for the vacuum pump on the gearbox end of the head, I dont know if this applies to the 2.1, and it is electronically managed as you know. I dont want you to buy it if you cant use it. If it doesn't sell, I will be offering the engine and gearbox seperatly in another auction.

Hello Peter, I have problems with my 2.1 xm hg. Would you think that its better for me to buy the whole engine of you than to try to rectify my hg ?

Hi Matthew

It would probably be just as easy as it took me about two weeks at an hour or two a day to change mine! But unfortunatly I think I have sold it now, but unless yours is a very late one I dont think that the electronic management would suit.

Update.

The chap who was buying it has changed his mind and is going to put a 1.9 in his boat instead! So its still for sale. If you dont want it I will put the engine and gearbox back on e-bay seperately.

My engine shouldn't need anything replaced, except the cam belt, for the first time, as it has only done 73,964 miles. I can verify this as I have the instrument panel of the car from which the engine was removed as well as the seats, which look like new. I paid £450 for the engine and box 3 or 4 years ago but never got round to using it. I would take £150 for the engine and £50 for the gearbox. The car was a rear damaged 'P'reg hatchback.

I bought the car I have now in Manchester and the gasket failed on that at 120k which is an unusually low mileage. must be something about Manchester! The previous one had done 292k when I sold it and was still going strong. They usually last around 150k but mine looked as though it had been eaten away by something in the water.

No I did not take the engine out but it would have been a lot easier to work on if I had. I had the head machined but they only took 10 thou off as it wasn't warped, only pitted by whatever was in the water. I replaced the gasket with a genuine Citroen one, which was expensive but looks as though it will last forever as it is laminated steel, what they call a 'repair' gasket, looks like a set of feeleer gauges. I had replaced the water pump 5k earlier so fitted yet another cam belt. Since doing the job about 10k ago the car has run faultlessly.
