RE: Citroen XM or Peugeot 605 2.1TD engine??
hi guys,
Would be nice to get some feedback on what is the better engine,
a Citroen XM or Peugeot 605 2.1TD engine?
I have recently purchased a N-reg 605 which suffered cambelt failure.
I have a choice of buying a P-reg Citroen XM 2.1TD engine which has covered 73k for £200
or a K-reg Peugeot 605 2.1TD engine which has covered 82k for £225.
I believe both are pretty much identical engines, but is one more economical than the other?
Also, would I encounter problems having to switch parts over if I decided on the XM engine?
I would rather the XM engine as it is cheaper, 4 years newer
and has covered less miles, although it has sat for three years in a garage!!
I thank anybody in advance for any expert knowledge/advice,
regards, Gerard

hi JohnD
OK thanks for that.
A friend will replace engine and seems not too bothered
about changing parts over if necessary.
So, bearing that in mind, would I be best to go for the XM engine?
Also, I still have the blown engine from 605 for parts.
What's your valued opinion.
Thanks again, I really do appreciate the feedback
as I am still undecided as to which engine to go for
but I am under pressure to make a prompt decision.
Regards, Gerard

Just a PS to Gerard
Get your friend to look at the picture on e-bay to make sure it will do. As was mentioned, the 1.9 engines have a drive for the vacuum pump on the gearbox end of the head, I dont know if this applies to the 2.1, and it is electronically managed as you know. I dont want you to buy it if you cant use it. If it doesn't sell, I will be offering the engine and gearbox seperatly in another auction.

My engine shouldn't need anything replaced, except the cam belt, for the first time, as it has only done 73,964 miles. I can verify this as I have the instrument panel of the car from which the engine was removed as well as the seats, which look like new. I paid £450 for the engine and box 3 or 4 years ago but never got round to using it. I would take £150 for the engine and £50 for the gearbox. The car was a rear damaged 'P'reg hatchback.

I bought the car I have now in Manchester and the gasket failed on that at 120k which is an unusually low mileage. must be something about Manchester! The previous one had done 292k when I sold it and was still going strong. They usually last around 150k but mine looked as though it had been eaten away by something in the water.
No I did not take the engine out but it would have been a lot easier to work on if I had. I had the head machined but they only took 10 thou off as it wasn't warped, only pitted by whatever was in the water. I replaced the gasket with a genuine Citroen one, which was expensive but looks as though it will last forever as it is laminated steel, what they call a 'repair' gasket, looks like a set of feeleer gauges. I had replaced the water pump 5k earlier so fitted yet another cam belt. Since doing the job about 10k ago the car has run faultlessly.
