Camchaft bearing cap. Can engine work without one?

Post by om2 »

Hi Dear All!
Just found the camchaft bearing cap in my engine compartment :(
Car was serviced few days before, but I don't know did the touch
this things or it was there for few years...
Oil on it looks pretty new. So I suspect worth. Can Engine work
without one? For how long?
The engine is 1.9TD on Xantia.
Thank You.
Jon

I would stop driving it, remove the rocker cover pronto and have a look inside, if it was me to see if the cap is missing!
If so, don't start the engine again, its liable to snap the camshaft at the very least.
Sorry.

Hmmm....do you mean one of the actual bearing journal cap's, if so then as Jon says don't drive it.
If you mean the cap covering the rotating end of the shaft, where the vacuum pump fit's on other models, then its not harmfull to the engine to use it without but it may lose oil, this may find its way into the clutch and trash it.
