BX Auto to Manual

Post by Ian Fearn »

Does anybody know what sort of job it is to swap over from an auto box to a manual box in a BX GTi 8v?

Don't bother. Just bring it fording at the weekend in Bury St Edmunds, destroy it and then buy a manual one!

Or are you looking to buy one?

I quite like auto's myself although they need a big lazy engine (preferably V8) for maximum waftability.

Up until 10 mins ago i fancied doing the conversion on a car i'd been offered.

The 4x4 BX is back on now but the same seller has offered me a red GTi 8v which i fancy even more!

Wish i could have both, know anybody who wants a red/black charleston?

FWIW, pretty straightforward I discovered when I supplied all the parts from a wreck to a guy who paid a specialist to do it and this guy quoted around 6 hours labour. However we did learn one thing with it and this was that if the car is injected, be sure to use the components from another injected car or you run into strife setting the Efi up as there's no place on the non injected cars bellhousing to mount the CAS and the gooses that did the job here weren't brave enough to drill the hole to mount it.
It would seem that the BE3 box is more likely to be a straightforward swap than a BE1 for tthis very reason but this could also just be a local thing as most early cars had the BE1 whilst the later ones had the BE3, having said that we still had early cars sporting the BE3 box, but just look for that hole and mount for the CAS regardless of the box being used.

I quite like the Charlestons but yet again, any new purchases would probably result in a cancelled marriage!

I would have no idea what to ask for this charleston!

I've spent the last year re-building it and its just about finished now. Mechanically its sorted, bodily its absolutely mint, probably one of the best original shells around. Fully re-sprayed (by me!!).

Needs things like tyres and a few bits of trim to finish off including re-spraying the bonnet.
