Clattering from Engine. Xantia HDI 90

Post by vagabond »

Hi All.

Wonder if anyone can help. Am getting a loud clattering noise from I think the offside side of the engine. Would that be where the belt is? Sounds like somthing has come loose in there.

It goes up slightly with the revs but not with the revs if you see what I mean!! It is quite loud.

The car runs ok, doesn't overheat.

Does it sound expensive. Should I at once stop running it!

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks all.

Paul.

sounds to me like the crankshaft pulley is breaking up.

I've just done the same job on my 306 HDi, made it so much quieter at idle, a lot less clattering!! The old pulley looked ok, but it was covered in a green\brown layer of dust which had also been spread around the surrounding area of the lower cambelt covers.
Also replaced the water pump too as it was leaking.... ended up taking all day :(
So yes, most likely the crank pulley, but if its not that then check the spring loaded idler on the aux belt for play, the spring in these can go soft and let them rattle about according to the technician I spoke to at my dealer!

I would agree with the crankshaft pulley, my parents synergie had the clattering going on for a while then one day it got much worse and lost the PAS, climate control and the battery light came on ive still got the old pulley and it looks a right mess.

Thanks guys.

Just booked it in to my independent. Exactly what he thinks it is. Its time for a cambelt change (90k) so he's going to change the water pump and idlers as well. Wont start it up again untill its done!

I'll post how much he charges.

Cheers all.
