Looking for MAP Sensor (update, found something ?? )

Post by Skeith »

The fuel black fuel hoses going to my injectors / fuel rail are leaky.
I went to the local parts shop to get replacemnets and they told me they cannot order those parts. They sugested that i could buy hose lenghts per the foot. There are strange clips holding these hoses on, can I replace these with duplo clips?
Could these hoses be causing any of the following problems I have noticed with the car.
When I start the car I have to keep the revs over up or it will die.
This lasts for about 30 seconds at which point it will idle at 900 revs.
Another problem I had was when driving home today. I came across traffic and was in stop go traffic. The car started idling at 1500 revs. I played with the pedal thinking it was like an auto choke an I would be able to knock it of by tapping pedal. this only seemed to make it worse as it started idling at 2000 revs then. after another while it started idling at 3000 rev at which point I pulled over and turned it off. I popped the bonnet to check on the hoses mentioned above and was suprised that these were bone dry.
After starting the car again about 5 minutes later the car cut once and then restarted it and it drove home the rest of the way woth no more idliong problems, normal 900-1000 rev idles rest of the way home.
Anyone have any idea if the problems are related as I am going to fix the hose problem as soon as I get new hoses for it.

That would be standard fuel hosing for injection systems (to withstand slight pressure). Gauge the old hosing for the correct inner diameter of replacement hosing.
Those strange clips are machine fitted hose clamps - to be replaced by the good old service type matching the fuel hose diameter and your screwdriver ....
Dont see any link betwen a smallish fuel leak and the engine idle problems. That would most likely be a (partial) clogged MAP sensor. Later type MAP sensors have the look like a standard temp sensor - and is fitted at bottom of the throttle housing.
You dont supply important info like yearmodel/mileage of your car ?

I said >> can I replace these with duplo clips?
I meant >> jubilee clips.
Anders Said >> to be replaced by the good old service type

Are we talking about the same clips?
Thanks

Exactly what every Handyman should have in his toolbox [;)]
You may try clean the MAP sensor as they often gunk up with oil sediment & dirt from the air intake.

Hi,
Fixed my leaky hoses, and replaced front spheres.(front right sphere membrane broken. hard as a rock)
What a dream ride.

Now i am back to my idle problem. Anders diagnosed it as MAP sensor and I will trust this assumption.

Now to find it.
>>and is fitted at bottom of the throttle housing.
Do I need to remove the trottle housing for access or should I be able to get at it?

Under my bonnet

Could this be the MAP sensor?

it is attached directly to the bottom of the intake manifold.

Map sensor update

Post by Gregg1100 »

Hi,
I get this every so often. In my case, it is the crankcase fumes from breather at top of engine, running down pipes and fouling STEPPER motor. I just remove stepper motor, and clean it out with carb cleaner, and the cavity that it sits in. I also remove potentiometer and clean that out too. Also clean out all the pipes. I have still to get around to put a filter between the breather pipe and stepper motor body.
If your car is P reg and newer, the MAP sensor is different to earlier ones. Mine looks just like an oil pressure switch. The guys at local Citroen dealers say that they have never sold a map sensor, nor have any other local dealers. Obviously not a thing that goes PHUTT.
My car is a 97 Cit Xant 16v 2ltr VSX
Another thing, this car was horrible to drive--jerking, revving. Turned out to be inlet manifold gasket leaking at ends. New gasket cured it. Just get a little revving every now and again.
Hope this helps,

Greg

Thanks greg,
Couldn't get that sensor off, seems as if the screws holding it on dont have cavities for a bit to fit, even tried security torx with the hole in center (as far as I can see, with a torch from bottom or even witth the aid of a mirror). have already removed the pot. checked it with a meter and it reads smooth rise and decent when twisted. will follow your advise with the pipes, must get proper jubelee before hand as its held on by factory clip at the moment (dont really trust them crappy clips any more after the fuel leak) :)
if that doesnt fix it then i will drop it into a garage as i have never removed injectors before and would not like to break them from lack of knowledge on how to remove them. you need to remove the trotle housing and injectors to remove the inlet manifold to gain proper access to the bottom and remove those screws.
Thanks,
Keith

P.S. Dont really know what a P reg is since we use the year on our reg plates here in ireland.

As for the sales of the sensors, from this board it show that cleaning them is all that is necessary. the standard procedure seems to be a good night on the radiater with some kitchen roll so the floor dont get messed up :)
