Diesel cats & EGR

Post by Village »

Hello there all, this is my first post, so be gentle with me! I've just bought a '97 ZX Dimension TD with 103k on the clock. Will the car have a catalyst and if it does can I replace it with a de-cat pipe to free up a little extra go ,not that its short of go, it matches my previous car in performance terms below 85, and that was a 2.5l 24v cavalier V6 (I should have bought shares in BP!), although the 0-60 of just under 7 secs will take some beating in an oil burner! On the subject of more go, would blanking off the EGR liberate some power as it can do on other diesels (ford 1.8, Omega 2.5)?

Depends on when in 1997 your ZX came to life. In the January tables they were listed as not having EGR/cats but by August, they did have them fitted.

How do tell Whether my engine is a D8A or a DHY? Presumably that will tell me if it has EGR/cat....

Why don't you just look and see whether it has a cat?

If it's a DHY engine, it will have the letters DHY in the VIN number. If you've got a cat, it will be in front of the exhaust midbox, just in front of where the gearstick comes out.
General consensus on this forum is decat XUD engines, and disable the EGR. Numerous threads in archive will tell you how.
As for getting a straight through downpipe, you'll need to find a smaller exhaust centre with a bit of expertese. The big chains are just fitters, and won't entertain such work.
As a rough guide to cost, I was quoted £45 last month to fit a through pipe on my Xsara.

Thanks for the decat advice, but I had a look at the engine and a plate on the front said D8A, so problem solved....
