Xantia flashing lights

Hi all got a problem on the xantia diesel 1.9tdi R reg 98 the Engine auto diagnosis light and the glow plug light are flashing quickly both together,This happens at start up but not every time and after a few minutes it goes off, when they are flashing theres a fairly loud clicking noise or tap which seems to come from the front nearside in the engine compartment.When the lights are flashing the engine does seem a bit noisy or rattley but runs perfect when the lights are off.Any ideas.

??Glowplug relay going a bit odd?? - would be about the right place in the engine bay.
Have a look, clean the connections and possibly substitute another in its place.
