Remove the hose from the pump which comes directly from the reservoir (thus draining the reservoir). While the pipe is off, turn the steering wheel lock to lock a few times to remove any excess in the pipes. Couple pipe back up and fill reservoir (usually needs 2 bottles of fluid). Start engine, turn lock to lock a few times to expell any air, and top up to the correct level. Should find if fluid that is removed is fairly black, then new fluid will make steering lighter.

I need to do this too on my ZX, so thanks for the tips. But how much fluid do I need? 2 bottles.... kind of depends on the size of the bottle!

The amount of fluid you need depends on whether you have a mk 1 or a mk2 ZX.
Later ZX's (I belive) have a power steering cooling loop below the radiator which needs another 1/3 to 1/2 of a bottle (500ml) to fill.
3 to 4 bottle should do you, covering any leaks / spills that may occur.

I use a turkey baster and suck all the old fluid out of the resevoir, and replace with new every year. Not quite as good as a full flush, but less change of breaking hoses / resevoirs etc.

In my ZX, the reservoir's cap says "dexron II", is it ok if I use "Dexron III" fluid?
