Brake light switch

The brake light switch on my Xantia is playing up. Having dismantled it I notice that there are two switches, one normally open and one normally closed, the normally open one is obviously for the brake lights but what is the purpose of the normally closed one?

That's a good possibility, but why does it take more pressure on the pedal to open the normally closed one than to close the normally open one?

My guess would be that the cruise control would be disabled by the NC switch and the brake light be turned on by the NO switch. That way the CC can be disabled without turning on the brake light.
But this is just a guess and might be totally wrong.

That would be fine but for the fact that the NO switch activates before the NC switch. So the brake lights operate before the NC switch opens. The difference in activation time would only be a fraction of a second when hitting the brakes.

Is that switch used by the hydractive system so it puts the car into hard mode for heavy braking but not for soft braking?
