Getting rid of cartoons

Post by vidfletch »

I have just bought a 1981 Citroen Dyane. It is in very good condition with one big exception.
The previous owner has painted it with the characters of The Magic Roundabout! On every door and panel! Now my kids and the local kids think it's hilarious but I would like it back to burgundy all over.
What would be the best and easiest way of getting rid of the cartoons?!?! It seems to be a mix of gloss paint mainly with some spray paint in parts.
The car is good and this holds it back some what!

I'm afraid its going to have to go back virtually to bare metal with chemical stripper- if you leave them and paint over, even in matt black or camouflage, you will always be able to see the shapes!!Just think how obvious even a little bit of badly flatted filler is under shiny paint................[:(]
Probably a panel at a time is the best way to do it,then leave each of them in primer until they are all done and respray or brush paint and flat then. That way you can keep using the car while the work is in progress.
You could go over it and try to flat it off with wet'n'dry, but you'd be at it for ever, and the cost in d/a discs if you did it with a power sander would be phenomenal.
you're going to be busy........[}:)]

if it is mostly house paint and the cars own paint is original factory low backed, you could just try some celulose thinners on some cloths, you may be lucky and it will lift it of,i have been doing simileron wings of a dersh some one had painted pink house paint and it has worked

Ok, I know I couldn't paint over it as its quite thick in places. Dougal the dogs ****gy coat for a start is nicely textured! LOL!!!
I'll try the thinners first and if not I'll strip it. Is Nitromors the way to go if I strip it?

yes, try the niromors, what have you lost if it doesnt work? Have to flat it back to the metal, if it does work, you are literally laughing.
Personally id drive it like it is, then again i have no sense of shame.

What is it about 2cv's that attracts people who would want to paint Dougal, etc, on their cars? I suppose its because Mr Rusty is already there................[:(!]
There's a 405 estate that I see regularly-its driven by a woman who's kids go to the same school as mine, and its painted with household gloss in rainbow and flower patterns, there's also a set of lorry horns bolted to the roof!!

Have you seen vans where you could read the what the vinyl lettering said even after its been removed?Even if you get the cartoon characters off perfectly, the paint underneath won't be the same colour as the rest because it hasn't been in the sun. T-Cut is your friend [;)]

Someone once tried to sell me an Astra estate that had the words "DICK'S TAXIS" still visible on the drivers door. I didn't buy it.....

Don't know... but my uncle did that when he bought my dad's 2CV6 in about 1982 (VWH 538T - I think its long dead!). Painted the wheels yellow too!
The uncle and aunt live in the south of France now, and he has written off several Cits and Renaults [B)]

Thanks for all the suggestions. 2CVs etc do attract all sorts of artists! Have you seen the TIGGER 2CV van on Ebay just now? I was sorely tempted! LOL!!! There was loads of painted ones at the World Meeting at Kelso. Some good and some not so good!
The Sidewinder is awaiting an Ami Super exhaust box. It is winging its way from Germany as we speak. Another Ebay purchase! New old stock one. I got the Dyane on Ebay too.
Once the exhaust box arrives I ma going to make up the rest of the exhaust from 2CV parts myself. The two local exhaust "specialists" were useless. There was an Ami Super powered Acadiane van at Kelso and it had the 2CV torpedo down the side so it must be possible with some modification (bodging).
