I have driven my XM TD12since it was new (1993) and it has now covered 460 000 km. I have kept fuel consumption records since day one and the average consumption hasn't changed since it covered it's first 10k km. I uses 6.7 l/100km = 41 m.p.g. Driving includes both motorway travel and town driving every day (although town driving i Sweden is not as heavy on fuel as town driving i England!).
I am, of course very pleased with such comsumption from such a large, heavy car. Of course, it is possible to improve the comsumption and on some european runs, where its only motorway, the consumption has come down to 6.0 l/100km = 46 m.p.g. and that with an AVERAGE speed of 140 kmh.
So the good old 2.1 l XUD really is an efficient old lump!

Hi folks
I've worked our that my 93 1.9TD ZX does around 38mpg on a daily basis, my daily drive is a mixture of traffic jams in Reading then fast motorway work on the M4 (conditions permitting). I do 92 miles a day.
If I am very careful (or just bloody skint), for example if my low fuel light was on I could get away with putting say £6 in, and I would get be able to do my 92 miles with the light on again during the last 10 miles. Bearing in mind the cost of diesel I'm getting well over 45mpg then, just by gentle use of the throttle and going about 65 on the M4.
I quite often do Patterdale (Lake District) and back to Swindon on one tank, with just enough fuel left to do the 46 miles into Reading.
It all depends on driving style. Worst ever MPG from a 1.9TD is about 32mpg when thrashed all the time. Can't afford that. <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Hi Adrian - You asked about the additive I used. Generally, it's Diesel Redex or Miller's Diesel Clean.

I drive a 1996 Xantia TD, bought in 1999 with 50,000Miles covered and returning 38MPG. I fitted a K&N air filter, and achieved 43MPG.Had injectors serviced, and Glowplugs replaced at 80,000 Miles car started returning 45/46 MPG. At around the 100K mark i started to use Nitrox Diesel Fuel additave when replacing the fuel filter I filled the fuel filter chamber with Nitrox I do this about every 10,000 miles ang I am getting over 50/53Mpg depending on my manner of driving.Fuel light starts to flash after about 620miles.I let it go on one occasion to 695 miles, but got worried, and bought fuel.I do think that I would have got the 700mls on that tankful.Average speed around 55mph

I'm getting 38 - 43mpg at the moment. Driving anything between 30 and 90 mph.
Passed the MOT, emmissions at 1.2 out of permissable 3.0. No additives at the time ( although used for the previous tank ).
Mind you, I had one of those Merc A-Class CDi diesels for 3yrs / 90k miles. Worst out of that was 41, best 65, average 50mpg.
That was seriously quick ( compared to the Xantia ), with a 1.7 !
Just goes to show what modern technology can achieve !

Hi Steve - Your 42mpg matches my 2.1TD exactly. Wonder if your mileometer is as optimistic as mine. As far as I can work out it's about 4% on the plus side.

My 2.0 HDi reads consistantly 5.5% on the high side, which interestingly enough, Citroen seem to think is acceptable and refuse to fix it !

By law speedometers are allowed an accuracy of +/- 10% therefore there is no need for the dealer or manufacturer make the speedo more accurate. If all speedometers were accurate there would be no leeway on speeding tickets.......
