Wrong sort of intercooler...

Post by Kowalski »

Have a look at this,
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 12001&rd=1
the intercooler is on top of the engine, both of my two have front mounted intercoolers, so is this a bodged repair or did it get moved when the facelift happened?

RUN AWAY!
Its got an earlier 1.9TD engine grafted in. Probably the original was chuffed or its been taken out and put into another motor. The intercooler wont be very effective.

I notice he says the Rev Counter does not work on the Xantia - I wonder why? Possibly somehing to do with the pick up not being the same for the year of engine? All it needs is a round air filter and it would be perfect!
RAC list it as:
Manufacturer CITROEN
Model XANTIA 1.9 TURBO D LX
Body type ESTATE
Colour RED
Fuel type HEAVY OIL
Date manufactured 31 December 1998

Its also got a mechanical fuel injection pump, shouldn't it be electronic on a '98? I recon its out of a BX or 405.

98-99 is still mechanical injection pump (being a 1.9TD, and not a HDI) as far as im aware. In my opinion, with the facelift, the grille on the front is now present (like on facelifted zx's, and xsaras (which have it on top), so is it possible that its supposed to be a top mount one?

Thats the same engine my K reg BX TZD turbo had, i think its a 1769cc bx engine instead of the 1908 engine the xantia should have,

the engine is not from a BX, if it is then someone went to a lot of expence and trouble to take a lot of pipes from a 405. However there are a lot of other things that don't add up. The position of the alternator suggests its a non aircon model, however there are plugs on the thermostat housing which i thought where for aircon!
The pipe running from the air filter to the intake on the turbo looks to have been buggered together with various parts (you can see white writing on the pipe), and hence why i suspect the engine is from a 1.9td 405.
Looking at the pump and known configurations of the BOSCH pump i've quite certain that it is a 1.9td. Surely if it started life with a 1.9TD then it should have had the parts to have a front mount intercooler? I suspect what is much more likely is that it has had a serious front end impact, possibly doing damage to the intercooler and who ever has come to fix it has stuck in a top mount.
I can also find no mention of a bonnet lagging with an air duct!
personally i'd run away from it very fast, between the spelling and Escort ownership there is something rather wrong about the car!

how the hell is the intercooler supposed to work there? you'll have to cut a hole in the bonnet to stop it melting the turbo.

It must have come from a ZX, the original lump has gone pop, they've done an engine swap and not bothered changing the manifolds and stuff. Cheapskate repair.

I've been looking at the pictures a bit more closely, a few things caught my eye.
It has a throttle position sensor on top of the fuel pump, my '94 doesn't but my '97 does, and the '97 has the electronic controlled fuel pump. The rev counter seems to be pointing at an "interesting" position and the car appears to have been left in gear.
I'm tempted to use the ebay "ask seller a question" facility ;)
