C5 questions!

Post by silverback »

My Father in law has bought an 02 C5 2.0 HPI petrol Exclusive with 84k miles.
It is a lovely car but it sounds like a diesel at tickover. It quietens up dramatically when revved a bit though.
Does anyone have any experience of these cars, and is this diesel like noise normal?
He is keen to get the cam belt changed asap and we have been given a quote of £125 all in, from a local citroen specialist. A Citroen main dealer wanted over £500!
Do we have to change the tensioners at the same time?
The Cit specialist says not, but I would like to ask the forum if he is correct.

It would be best to give the pulleys a spin when the belt is off to listen for rough running. My 2.1 diesel is on roughly the same mileage and although I've done the belt twice, the tensioner pulley is still smooth.

All the HPi engines sound like that, personally i would avoid an HPi like the plague.as for the tensioners i wouls just check them once the belt is off,i have never relaced any tensioners, rollers or water pumps just for the sake of it.

Well, my pa in law didn't know he had bought it till the auctioneer asked him to come to the stand. He was only adjusting his hat!
The car is in good condition genererally. and the previous owner has been traced and spoken to. He confirms that the car has been serviced on the dot as it was his company car.
I honestly thought it was a diesel when I started it up, but my Hdi is quieter at tickover.
As I said previously, the car does quieten up quite a lot when the revs rise.
